Laura Kayoukluk Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 20, 2015.
Laura Kayoukluk (Akalook, Naghusak) was born on Feb. 26, 1925, in Shaktoolik, Alaska, to Frederick and Baayin Asicksik; one of seven siblings. She married Lawrence Kayoukluk on Nov. 1, 1994. They raised 12 children between Unalakleet, Shaktoolik and Anchorage, Alaska. Laura and Lawrence worked as volunteer Health Aids for 12 years in Shaktoolik. Laura also worked for ten years as a senior companion at the Pioneer Home in Anchorage, as well as a cook at the Covenant Bible Camp for many years. She will be remembered in many ways, especially in her love for family and her faith in Christ. She was a devout member of the First Covenant Church. Her favorite verse was Isaiah 10:41. She is survived by: Roy Kayoukuluk, Virginia Reynek, Joanne and Chip Swanson, Lynda and Emory Nashalook, Isabelle and Henry Ryan, Larry Jr. and Sally Kayoukluk, Laura Kayoukluk, Adeline O'Connor, Ebba Kayoukluk, Violet and Randsom Bradley and her many, many grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Kayoukluk; and her daughters, Gloria Kayoukluk and Sharon Negron. Laura passed away peacefully on March 16, 2015, with family surrounding her near and far. The family would like to express sincere gratitude to her eldest son, Roy, who cared for her for many years. The funeral services will be held at the First Covenant Church on Saturday, March 21, 2015, at 1 p.m., with a potluck afterwards, and another memorial and burial in Unalakleet is pending. Her positive outlook on life and laughter will always be remembered.

10 years ago, you were in the hospital with pneumonia. I asked family to just visit you in the hospital, to be there with presence. Not even talk because you were hoarse voiced. You never did recover. March 16th 2015 you were welcomed by Jesus, God, your parents, siblings, children, your babies you waited decades to see who were passed before they met you on earth. Gloria, after her accident finally got to see her mom again. Sharon, rejoiced with love and no pain. And now you have greated other children, Totsie, Girlie, my mom Adeline and your baby Violet!!! To raise so many children, so many Girls. You were one tough Lady, til the end of your life.

I love you.

I miss you

And one day, looked forward, to rejoice with you all.

Much love gram!!

Forever and always

A year and 10 months without you. I feel like I will never stop hurting, I still reach for my phone to call when something funny or amazing happens. I want more than anything in the world, more time to hear your stories, make you proud, just feel your love. I try to show my daughter pictures every so often so she'll never forget you, I wish she had more time with you too. I will never forget the kind, loving, God fearing woman you were. I love you gram. Missing you every moment of every day.

I will miss seeing Laura. She would tell me about summers where we camped together up Shaktoolik River at our fish camp. And that she called my mom, Annie Dotomain, "auntie." I told her that I called her mom, Baayin Asicksik, "auntie." So we must be cousins. I will miss her sweet spirit.

In memory of Auntie Laura, and her sis, Dina. Proverbs 31 speaks of "a woman who fears the Lord -- she is to be praised....her children rise and call her blessed." Thank you Auntie Laura and Dina, for your example of a Believer--your children indeed rise and call you Blessed, even unto a fifth generation. "Well done, thou good and faithful servants." Your love has known no bounds.

Auntie was a woman of grace, compassion humor, and so sweet. Many are richer from how she lived day by day. She lived her faith in God and led quietly by example. Listening to her pray indicated the depth of her faith. Rest in peace. Condolences to all the children and grands.

Our sincere condolences to you, Joanne, and all of your family members. It was a wonderful service yesterday, acknowledging Roy and how he looked after your Mom and the stories told. As Vernita Herdman mentioned on a FB post, Laura's work to translate songs into Inupiaq should be acknowledged, in this way she was a a cultural "pillar" for the village of Unalakleet. Once I find the photos of our mother's together one fall in Unalakleet, I'll scan and share them. I'm sure that the gathering that you'll have in Unalakleet, to celebrate her life, will be equally beautiful.
