David, Audrey, Joel, & Ann,

I stopped by Alltel today to say hello and catch up with Laurin, only to learn of the devestating news of his passing. I can not even process the idea that he is not just a phone call away to help cheer my day. He truely gave me a life time of wonderful memories for the time that we shared together. Laurin has always been a positive influence in my life and I would like to thank him for helping me to grow into the mature person I am today. He always talked to me about the importance of a college education and I am now in my senior year. I feel that he deserves all the credit for where I stand today and I know that he will be watching from heaven on my graduation day.

Laurin touched so many lives in his short journey here on earth and I know that he has gone on to do greater things in heaven. My sincerest thoughts and prayers go out to all of his family, financee, and friends. I pray that we all seek peace and comfort in the Lord and in knowing that Laurin is in heaven shining down on us all.

I am a bartender at Ham's on High Point Road. I had the great pleasure of knowing and working with Laurin as a Bouncer. He really did have the most beautiful smile! When I was told the news I couldn't believe it. I wished and hoped it was not him but another"lauren".
I always joked with him and told him he must work out , as he had huge arms. However, he always said," I really don't workout-the only workout I get is lifting my chess pieces!"
He always made me smile when he did his karoke too, I never expected him to sing a country song and there he would go! :-)
I never got the chance to meet his fiance, and I wish I had- I am so sorry for you and his parents tragic loss! He will be sadly missed by myself and ham's on High Point Road!!

I had the pleasure of meeting Laurin about 5 years ago at the Greensboro Chess Club. After that night, we became good friends and started traveling to tournaments together. Laurin and I would always catch a tournament on the weekend if it was close by, and sometimes we would travel almost out of state to be at one also. I will always remember the times Laurin would call me wanting to go to Barnes and Noble or just going to his apartment to play some intense games of chess. Over the years, Laurin and I played so much chess together, that we started to play like one another! Laurin had a great personality. He would keep me laughing for hours on end, and sometimes we would get in a little trouble at tournaments for being to loud. Laurin was a great chessplayer, but far more a great friend!! I loved Laurin like a brother, because thats how he treated me. I hope everyone gets to meet a person like Laurin in their life, because Angels are hard to come by! I remember before I left for the Navy Laurin always telling me he wanted to be the first African American Expert in the State of NC. So when and if I make Expert, I am going to dedicate it to Laurin, because Laurin is not 1736. His chess ability surpasses the Expert ranking in my book!!! I love you Laurin and I miss you like crazy, and I can't wait to see you and play more intense games of chess with you again brother!!!!

I went to school with Laurin- Many, Many years ago. He and I used to march in Page High School's Band together. Laurin was a few years younger than me, but I clearly remember his smile, his distinctive laugh and constant positive attitude- what a joy to be around! I was very surprised to hear of his passing, yet VERY glad to know that he is in Heaven with our God- "Smiling & Laughing" for eternity! My prayers of peace beyond understanding go out to the Keller family & his fiance'- with Love

I just learned today of this tragic news, and to say that I'm speechless and torn is understatement. You know, I had the pleasure to meet Laurin when I came to Alltel in the summer of 2003. Laurin was always nice & kindhearted. When I came to Alltel, I was struggling financially. I would come to work hungry, most of the time. I would never ask him for anything, but in his heart, he knew that I was hungry. Without blinking, he would say, "Jermaine, let's go to Wendy's and get something to eat." "But I don't have any money.." I would say to him "I didn't ask..." he would say back to me. He did that on many occassions. We kept in touch ever so often. We committed to hanging out over a burger, my treat this time, and catch up. I never got that chance.

I will end this by saying this. I believe that an angel was among us, and his work was done. And when and angel's task is done, God calls him back home to rest. I got to know this angel. And I say, rest well my friend. We'll meet again and talk about old times and what I've missed since he's been in heaven. Till then...

Dearest Keller Family,
I was surprised and truly saddened to learn of your loss. Laurin was admired and respected by all who were blessed to have known him. He is part of many of my most cherished high school band memories, and it is without a doubt that he will be truly missed. May God's comfort be your strength during this difficult time. My thoughts and prayers are with each of you...

Laurin was truly a most joyful individual. I enjoyed him tremendously and am sad that I will not be able to see him on this side of eternity. I am confident however that I will see him on the other side of eternity after I pass on to meet my Lord Jesus. I attribute Laurin's joy to the Holy Spirit that he welcomed into his heart.

I first met Laurin playing chess in 2004. We became instant friends, and our friendship was the type that simply picked up where we last left off at the past chess tournament. Laurin and I played at least twice, the first time Laurin had a very good attacking position as white that I managed to defend to a draw somehow. We both agreed I was lucky indeed to earn a draw.

The very next time we played Laurin crushed me, exacting a measure of revenge that I coined "Chess Justice". What a laugh we shared with that idea! From then on anytime we wanted to make the other fellow laugh all we had to do was slowly and deeply say the phrase "Chess Justice".

Praise God that Laurin will not be receiving "Chess Justice" from his Lord, but "Amazing Grace"!!!

Grace for Justice ... hmmmm ... now that's a trade that Laurin would call winning the exchange!

I opended the news paper friday and the first think I did was look down and I saw Laurin and his beautiful smile. I kept telling myself thats the wrong person, then I saw his name and I just started crying. I couldnt believe what I was seeing. I met Laurin maybe 4 years ago at walmart and from that day on, I'd loved him ever since. He was the funniest guy, his smile lit up a room. I new if I ever needed anything that I could go stright to him. He will NEVER be forgotten and every one of our memories will be cherished. Laurin thank u from the bottom of my heart for everything u did. I'll never forget ya. Love always. As for Laurin's parents, you both did a great job as having such a wonderful son. He was the greatest. He will be greatly missed. Just remember all things happen for a reason and just keep in mind, he'll always be watching over you. Hugs and prayers your way. To his fiance, prayers are with you also.

My families deepest sympathies and condolences over the loss of Lauren he was my best friend and when I recieved the call and I hung up the phone I walked into my familes office and it hit me that I had lost my best friend. I fell to my knees and cried out until I collapsed my mothers loveing arms couldn't shield me from the pain I feel inside. I feel a part of me died with Lauren but I know he wouldn't want me to suffer. I know he would want me to smile because he always made me smile. Even after services today I cannot grip the pain inside.Being adopted nobody has ever been close to me but Lauren was. I've lost alot of people in my life over the past few years and loseing Lauren is the hardest cross I've ever had to bare. I pray to the Lord he eases your suffering and gives us all strength to carry on.I cannot begin to express the deep heart felt sorrow I feel for all of you. To Laurens fiance I never had the pleasure to get to know you but I know Lauren loves you so much and he wanted a life with you. We had such wonderful discussions about the wedding and to lose the best friend I've ever had is ripping me too pieces. My sincerest condolences to everyone.

Dear Dave, Audrey, Joel and Ann,
This is a copy of the eulogy that I read at Laurin's funeral. Thank you so much for allowing me to be as big a part of his funeral as he was in my life.

Laurin Davis Keller
8.10.75 – 7.18.07

It’s not often that you get to meet someone like Laurin, less common still that you have the privilege of calling him your friend. I had the distinct honor of being able to call Laurin my best friend.
Over the years Laurin and I developed a mutual love and respect for each other. He always made time in his busy schedule for me, and I did likewise for him. Through all of the different challenges that life presented me, he was there for me. He had my back. And for all the good times he was either right there in the middle of it, or he was there to celebrate it with me.
Laurin was probably the epitome of contradictions. Think about it. He hated the cold weather, but went to school at Appalachian! How many avid chess players are also bouncers? But that was the essence of Laurin. He was true to himself, his family, and his friends.
I know that Laurin would be both humbled and happy that this many people showed up for him. But I often joked with him that he had more friends and contacts than anyone. So I’m not surprised. And I just want to ask all of you to continue supporting his family as you have been.
Dave, Audrey, Joel, Ann, I can’t begin to imagine what you’re each going through. But I know it’s been extremely hard on me, so it must be far worse for each of you.
I can’t begin to understand why he was called home when he was. I just want to thank God that we had the chance to have breakfast that morning. What I do know and understand is that Laurin left us to be with Jesus according to God’s will; according to His perfect plan. And our sole purpose for being here is to glorify God.
Jesus said in John 11:25-26 “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies. And whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?”
Well I just thank God that Laurin believed this, because I know where he is now. Thanks be to God. Rest well my friend. I miss you.

Dearest Keller family,

My thoughts and prayers go out to you in this time of great sorrow. I am deeply saddened at the news that Laurin has left this life, yet comforted that he is in a much better place now with our Lord and Savior. After reading what everyone else has written in this guest book, I can see what a wonderful impact he had on this earth. Although it has been years since I have been blessed with the presence of Laurin, I remember his smile and kindness to all who he came into contact with. I remember looking up to him as my brother and Joel and I grew up in church. We had many laughs and good times. I will cherish those memories forever.

Laurin and I first met at the Greensboro Chess Club. He was a pleasure to play, and to even be around. He had a fun-loving attitude that spread joy to all.

Laurin was a serious chess competitor who had only scratched the surface of his potential. The NC Chess Community will miss him.

On a personal level, I was shocked and deeply affected by his untimely passing.

I cannot imagine the pain that those who were closest to Laurin are experiencing. Please accept my deepest heartfelt sympathies.

Laurin was a friend, a bouncer, our brother. He is going to be greatly missed by all of those he came into contact with him. One night while I was working for Ham's Palladium I remember meeting Ann and telling her that she found a really good, genuine guy. I think just about everyone he knew could say the same thing about him. I am going to miss joking with him about his karaoke. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends, may the Lord welcome him home.

As we fondly recall elementary school days with Laurin at Price Traditional School, he will be remembered as an "exceptionally caring" young man. Your strong faith will strengthen you at this time. What a witness your family continues to be. We cannot imagine the pain you are now enduring. Hope you can feel our hugs. Jack & Sharon Ridge and Donald Ridge (age 31)

No bond is as great as that between a parent and child. My deepest condolences are with you as you grieve.

I am the owner of D&M Staffing. Laurin was a perfect example to many who worked with him. "As a co-worker and a friend". He had a heart of gold and I speak on behalf of the company that he will be greatly missed and his presence will always be a part of our lives. I for one
am honored to have known him for the man he was. My heart goes out to the family. And I will be praying for!
