Larry was a lifelong educator teaching at Homewood-Flossmoor High School. He received many distinguished awards. Visitation: Fri., Nov. 6th 4-8 PM at Friedrich-Jones Funeral Home, 44 S. Mill St., Naperville, IL 60540. Funeral: Sat., Nov. 7th 10 AM at SS. Peter & Paul Cemetery at the outdoor Grotto, Naperville. Info: 630-355-0213 or www.friedrich-jones.com

Larry Baran was a wonderful friend to my son Matthew. He took him under his wing and gave him so much love. Matthew loved to work with special children. They brought a big smile to his face. Matt passed away at a young age and Larry helped to bring joy to my heart. Love to all of his family. I miss you.

Larry Baran was a wonderful human being; he was upbeat, optimistic, always thinking of others and has made a huge impact on those he came in contact with. Larry and I went to graduate school at Loyola and remained friends long after we received our doctorates. His video Roses Around the Heart still sits on our bookshelf and I continue to tell people about the great work he did for his challenged students. When Larry delivered thousands of boutonnières for his Bubble Gum for Bosnia project to DC to be sent to troops overseas, he stayed with us in Maryland. His physical struggle with his leg never stood in the way of helping others. Cathy, we have never met but enjoyed hearing about you and the children and can only imagine how much you miss him. Larry filled the room and left a void in all of our lives. We continue to pray for your family and to Larry, our new saint in heaven. Toni Bouillette

I had the good fortune of meeting Larry through Cathy, his loving, patient and supportive wife. He had an amazing sense of humor and a quirkiness about him the could not be ignored. I truly believe that God took Larry at this time of the year because Saint Nicholas needs help filling all those shoes and that God himself needs help planning a Christmas Celebration.

Dr. Baran was my teacher 80-84. He was and will always be Captain Rainbow. The memory of His care, thoughtfulness, and love towards me remains to this day. I remember helping him pack his van of flowers so he could drive them to Washington DC for the Presidential Inauguration. God bless you Captain, bless you on your way.

I met Larry at the wake and Funeral of his dear friend, co-worker Jim Fleming who was my brother. I was so very impressed with his Faith, kindness and loving personality. Although I haven’t seen him since I will always remember as a truly unique and wonderful Human Being. Go ND.

Larry was a ‘one of a kind’ spiritual and opinionated treasure in the pool. The breakfast club included Julia, Karen, Beth and so many more. We shared religion and Catholic Education with a larger group in the beginning with Ed and Pat. One thing that was clear was that Larry had great Faith. I imagine he’s looking in God’s face ready to set God straight on the world or perhaps, he kneeling and thanking God for the riches he was given in life.

God, please take care of Larry. Allow him to rest as he was quite busy while on earth. Bless too his wife, who must already be a saint. And thank you for allowing my path to cross with Larry’s while he was here.

Indeed an angel received his wings on November 3. I am in shock. I had to read the obituary three times. My sincere sympathy to his family. Yes, Larry recevied many awards including the Studs Terkel Illinois Humanities Council Award. My daughter, Connie, HF grad in 1980, was present when his students delivered the flag lapel pins in Washington DC at the dedication of the war memorial. Just marched right in . Who was going to stop a group of kids with American flags? Again, my condolences. He was an icon in Homewood history. Is there an address to which I can send poems which gave me comfort and hope they can be of comfort to the family.
Sincerely,
Elaine Egdorf
