Lawrence BRADLEY Obituary

Published by Ottawa Citizen from May 18 to May 21, 2013.
BRADLEY, Lawrence Douglas
May 24, 1936 - May 16, 2013
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Lawrence Douglas Bradley on May 16, 2013 at the age of 76 following a difficult battle with cancer. Beloved husband of Shirley (Bobbi), loving and cherished father of Debbie (Peter Becke), Cristine (late Stephen Munger), Michael, Julie (Tim Agnew), Karen (Dennis Blackie), and stepfather of Kelley (Sandy) and Todd (Barb). Larry is survived by his dear sister Brenda Maunder (Les) and mother of his children Ruthmary Harris. He was sadly predeceased by brother Kenneth James. Larry will be dearly missed by his eleven grandchildren and eight step- grandchildren.
Larry attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY where he played hockey, helped RPI win the prestigious NCAA title, and graduated in civil engineering. He came back home to Canada with his young family and eventually established an illustrious and successful professional Ottawa-based career as a leader and partner in the consulting engineering firm Cumming Cockburn Limited. His retirement years were happy and fulfilling as he and Bobbi thrived with their friends and community on Vancouver Island, BC and South Florida in the winters and at Golden Lake, ON during the summers. Larry's pride and joy was his family. He followed with great satisfaction the various adventures, misadventures and life accomplishments of his children and grandchildren. He looked forward each year to getting back to Golden Lake where he recharged his battery and continuously planned and implemented the next engineering project.
Larry will be missed enormously and cherished forever. He leaves us with memories that will make us smile throughout our lives.
At Larry's request no funeral service will be held. A private interment of ashes will take place at Golden Lake and a celebration of life will be held in Ottawa at a later date. Condolences or tributes may be made at www.Remembering.ca or www.firstmemorial.com (select Duncan location). If desired, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. John's United Church in Golden Lake (3230 Lake Dore Road, Golden Lake, ON, K0J 1X0).

Not very often that I am at a loss for words but this is one of those times.

I recently found out about your passing. My thoughts and prayers go out to all of your family and children.

A very, very, very long time has passed since I had the honour and privilege of experiencing just a tiny snippet of time within that aura that constantly surrounded your life, your children and the extended Bradley clan. I remember it being like a moth being drawn to a lamp. Then, if you add on your friends, colleagues, buddies, hobbies and pets - your family reach was just simply gigantic.

Thank you Larry for being such a role model for me during my teenage years when our lives intersected because of your daughter. Our mutual love of hockey, golf and the way you treated people remains a shining example for me personally, to this day.

Even as a self-absorbed teenager, I got some of what you dished out. My world and my life is better because of that.

I can only hope to try to live up to those ideals. You left a giant legacy and were like another Dad for me and I’ll never forget.
Thank you,

...a year has gone by, and I still don't know what to say....I will miss you forever, and hope to live by your standards of accepting every person at face value with open arms, and offering Second Chances without judgement. I will continue to follow your father's example and Live Life; every minute of It. ? ? ? Karen

The Bradley Family
My heartfelt sympathy for all of you. Larry was a special person, one of a kind who continued to come and visit me in my little tearoom in Balderson. Many years ago he called me his 5th daughter. Remember all the good times and try and smile and laugh.

Bobbi,

We have known you for many years and were so very happy when you met Larry. He definitely was the "light of your life". You were so happy. Andy enjoyed working on your house here in Ottawa, and I was so lucky to work with you at Canada Post for so many years. You are a very special person and we know how happy you were with Larry and how special he was to you. Please accept our sincere condolences and you both will be in our hearts forever.
Love, Anne & Andy Mathieu

My heartfelt condolences to Bobbi, family, and friends. Larry was one of a kind indeed. As a young engineer, I learned a lot from him. About engineering but even more so about how to interact with others. Larry was kind and generous. He showed us how you can excel in engineering and business, yet stay down to earth. Larry was a true friend. It's an honour to have known him and worked with him.

To All of the Bradleys:

We were so very sorry to hear the news about Larry. He was such a good friend and neighbour to all of us. He was always there to help and did so in so many ways such as by permitting us to take water from his well at the cottage, providing advice on the construction and maintenance of our cottage and lending us tools and ladders. We looked forward to seeing him each summer at Golden Lake and always felt reassured to know that he was just a few steps away down the cottage road. He will be greatly missed.

Please accept our most sincere condolences.

Yours truly,

Peter, Kathleen, Katie, Billy, Emily and John

Dear Family and close Friends of Larry Bradley:
I feel so sad to hear that Larry just passed away. I started my professional carrier in Cumming Cockburn LTD (CCL) while Larry was leading the company. It is difficult to express in words how extraordinary man Larry was to all employees. Through almost 30 years of my working carrier, I have never had such an exceptionally good boss as Larry was. If only more persons like Larry were in this world, we would be living in very happy times. Larry was caring and understanding boss who is greatly missed. I was sorry to hear that he had this terrible disease.
Although I did not see Larry, since his retirement, I always had memories of Larry in my heart. This was a person who thought me how to work effectively and be part of such a great group as CCL.
My heart thoughts go now with the Family and close Friend that just lost such a Great Person.

I had the pleasure of working with Larry in Ottawa while he engineered at DeLeuw Cather. Fondest memory of Larry was his ever bright smile and good humor. We sodded his front lawn together one bright Spring day.

It is with great sadness that we write this. Larry was a great friend, mentor and boss. He hired me after I had had many interviews. Not sure if it was because I was a Newfie or that he really liked me. I remember him apologising repeatedly for wearing a three piece suite during my interview. "We don't dress like that around here' he said.
Take good care of yourself Bobbie and hope to see you soon.

Love to all of your family at this time.
