BUTLER - Sergeant Lawrence P. (Larry) 1958 - 2009 Passed away January 9 after a courageous battle with brain cancer. Special service is being held to celebrate and remember the life of Larry. Please join family and friends on January 29, at 2 pm at Burkeview Chapel, 1340 Dominion Ave., Port Coquitlam to share in memories of Larry. A formal memorial service in conjunction with the Vancouver Police Department will be held at a later date.

I just now learned of Larry's death, reading about it on PC Sandra Glendinning's blog. I knew Larry in a professional capacity (I'm a Crown), always knew an interesting case was coming my way when he came to my office. He was invariably helpful when I needed information, or some follow-up on a file. Not to mention he had a great sense of humour.

I just want to express my condolences to Larry's family, friends and colleagues at the VPD - this is a great loss.

Larry, was one of the kindest and most sincere people, I have ever met.

He was married to my Niece Laura, so became a member of the extended family.

He was such a great person and he loved her so.

I last saw Larry in Sept. of '08 and as sick as he was, he hugged me so tightly, it took my breath away. I was fortunate, to be able to spend a few days with he and Laura and will forever remember ' our ' movie night.

You will be forever missed and never forgotten..I am honored that you came into my life.

My prayers go to all who now feel the loss of such a great guy. To know him was to love him. It had been so long since I had seen Larry but the memories of him in high school are so strong that I can't help feel that time doesn't change your feelings for someone special who has touched your life.

I had the chance to meet and work with Larry back in 2006 when he came down to assist Wyoming law enforcement. I found him to be a fine officer and human being. He was always eager help no matter how far it took him out of his way. Vancouver has lost a good man and officer and we have lost a good friend. Our prayers are with Larry’s family and friends.

Larry and I were good friends for just a few years in junior high. I recall a teenager with outstanding character, a flare for playing the trumpet, and a passion for riding his trail bike. Larry will be missed.

To the family and friends of Larry, I want to pass on my heartfelt sadness at the passing of such a good man. I knew Larry through our jobs and had the honor of spending time with Larry as our work lives brought us together. If I ever asked Larry for anything he was more than willing to help me. Whether racing motorcycles, raising horses, hosting a party or sipping a beer by the camp fire, Larry tackled things with passion and flair.

Larry was an exemplary sportsman. He excelled at so many sports; lacrosse, soccer, golf and squash to name a few. He took no prisoners no matter the sport. He also played the trumpet, rode and raced motorcycles, was a scuba diver and sky diver, and was an accomplished marksman. Larry lived life to the fullest. His professional standards were as high as his sporting standards and this could be seen in his skills as one of the finest police officers with the Vancouver Police Department.

Larry treated all human beings, be they professional colleagues, personal friends or casual acquaintances as equals; a unique trait for which he was deeply respected.

He had a sparkle in his eyes and grace in his manner which left most without defence against a sense of humour which became almost legendary.

Larry never asked for much, but rather gave much. His friends were his tonic, and he never tired of their company. If music be the heart of life, then laughter and good friends were Larry’s soul.

Rest easy, my friend.
