LAWRENCE GAICHAS Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Aug. 11 to Aug. 16, 2019.
GAICHAS LAWRENCE EDWARD "LARRY"

Larry was born March 30, 1942 and raised in Chicago, IL. He went on to Xavier University for a B.A. and Ohio State University for his M.A. and Ph.D. He was a professor of Classics at Duquesne University for 40 years and was an exceptional teacher and mentor to many students. He was also Chairman of the Classics Department for many years. In his leisure time, he loved to pilot airplanes at Zelienople and Butler Airports, where he participated in many activities and made many friends. He particularly enjoyed working with the Young Eagles program that gave children free airplane rides several times a year. Larry loved the outdoors. He introduced his children and grandchildren to the joys of canoeing and fishing. He was a persistent gardener (despite the challenges presented by herds of deer). He also enjoyed woodworking, and made many pieces of furniture for his home and his children's homes. He made a dollhouse (and dollhouse furniture) for his daughter which was a replica of his first home in Pittsburgh, which his granddaughters still enjoy. Larry loved doing difficult jigsaw puzzles, reading mysteries, and had a very witty sense of humor. He took every opportunity to make puns, and also took great pleasure in the groans he heard in reaction. Above all, he loved his family and the time he shared with them. He is survived by his wife, Kathleen; daughter, Sarah; son, Tim; son-in-law, James Battin; grandchildren, Max and Devin Gaichas and Annabel and Elise Battin; brothers, Thomas and David Gaichas; sisters-in-law, Lauretta Moran and Kevinne Moran; brothers-in-law, Kieran Moran and Juntao Cai; and many nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, August 16, at Saints John and Paul Catholic Church, 2586 Wexford Bayne Road, Franklin Park, PA. A luncheon will follow at The Chadwick, 10545 Perry Hwy., off of Richard Road in Wexford, PA.

Larry supported me from my first semester teaching Classics at Duquesne through the day when I submitted my retirement letter. He encouraged me in all matters professional--and in others, even how to be a successful new grandparent. I was always happy when we flew to a conference--being a plane enthusiast myself. His support of me and my daughter, who was an adjunct in the deparement, was so important to us. And what other department head would have built my office bookcases? His smile and gentle manner will be missed.

I was so fortunate to have gotten to know Larry, both at Condor and at EAA. As a former high school Latin student, how refreshing to meet a Latin scholar with such a great sense of humor. Larry always stepped up to the plate to help out whenever asked; he was truly one of the good guys. And such a gentleman. As so many have already said, I'll miss you, Larry. Thank you for all you did to help so many -

May you fly with the angels

I've expressed my condolences to Kathy, Sarah, and Tim, but I want say here to all others that LarryGaichwas a friend for 59 years, four at Xavier and four at Ohio State. Although we saw each other but once since 1970 and although he and I barely, rarely kept in touch, through Kathy's annual correspondence Jan and I always remembered them. Larryproudly blooded Chicagoanwas subtly arch but never nasty, quirky but never trivial, and this photo makes me regret the decades that we've been two and a half thousand miles distant. We not only shared a love of the Greeks and Romans but of all literature. Since the '60s, whenever I thought of him I always remembered a phrase from a piece that he wrote at Xavier: a cloud-scudding sky. Whenever I see such a sky I'll be reminded of Gaich. Ave atque vale, old friend.

I was shocked to see this obituary and your family has our heartfelt sympathy. Our parents dearly loved spending time with Larry and Kathy. We hope Larry was greeted by our Mom and Dad when he passed. May he rest in peace. With Sincere Sympathy, The Sebrosky Family

Larry was a great guy and will be missed by his friends in the EAA Chapter 857 at Pittsburgh-Butler Regional airport. I worked with Larry on the EAA board and the Young Eagles events and his shoes will be hard to fill. RIP Larry! Phil Kriley
