AuSABLE FORKS — Lawrence "Waxy" Andrew Gordon passed on June 27, 2009, at his home with his loving family nearby. He was born April 8, 1923, in Plattsburgh, N.Y. He grew up in AuSable Forks, N.Y., and moved to Vero Beach, Fla., in 1978 as a part-time resident.

Lawrence, with his brother Lewis, were partners at Gordon Oil Company in AuSable Forks, a family business that was started by his father, Clifford Gordon, in 1941. The business is now being operated by his two sons, Jon and David. He graduated from AuSable Forks Central School and joined the U.S. Navy in 1942, serving in the Pacific until 1946. He is a member of the Forest Park Baptist Church in Vero Beach, Fla., and is also active in the Jay Baptist Church and the AuSable Forks Methodist Church, where he was licensed as a lay preacher 50 years prior, through the Troy Conference of the United Methodist Church. He was active in the Boy Scouts, serving years as a scoutmaster and was district commissioner for the Adirondack Council, B.S.A.

He was a Mason at Tahawus Lodge 790 and was a Past Master. He was also a Rotarian serving as president of the AuSable Forks Rotary Club and a charter member of the Sunrise Rotary Club of Vero Beach, Fla. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a lifetime member of the American Legion. He loved walking, running and mountain climbing in the Adirondacks and sponsored many Walk-A- Thons in the AuSable Forks area.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Doris (Morhous) Gordon; two daughters, Kathy Votraw and son-in-law Jim of South Glens Falls, N.Y., and Denise Potter and son-in-law Eugene of AuSable Forks; two sons, Jon Gordon and daughter-in-law Ellen of AuSable Forks, and David Gordon and daughter-in-law Rachel of Peru, N.Y.; 10 grandchildren, Karley Votraw, James Votraw, Kelly Gordon, Randi Gordon, Mackenzie Gordon, Kristin Potter, Kodi Gordon, Andrew Wilson, Austin Depo and Carter Gordon; one great-grandchild, Laci Votraw; and two brothers, Lewis and wife, Patricia Gordon from Wilmington, N.Y., and Dr. Howard and wife, Nancy Gordon from Miami, Fla.

He was predeceased by his mother and father, Clifford and Kathleen Gordon; and his son, Ronald Gordon.

A memorial service will be held at the Methodist Church in AuSable Forks on Friday, July 3, at 2 p.m., followed by a reception at the American Legion.

Dear Doris & family,
I just heard about Waxy's entrance into eternal life - he was welcomed by my darling Howard & all his family & friends. I treasure his autobiography he sent me. Howard had such wonderful memories of Boy Scouts with Waxy & Lewie, their military leaves at home together & occasional visits after they all went their separate ways. My deepest sympathy to all, Pat

Doris and Family,

Waxy touched many people throughout his life. Carl shared the influence that Waxy had on him. Waxy and his brother went to pick up Carl and his family to take them to church each week. Carl stated that this was what led him to his faith in Christ and to want to pass on the gift that Waxy had given him. To his final days he deeply appreciated Waxy as a friend and mentor.

I came to know Waxy as a child. His kind and caring nature allowed me to know that here was a person I could trust. He always had his wonderful smile and an encouraging word for all.

His life was a gift from God to all who knew him.

God bless and keep you.

Although I grew up in AuSable I never got to know Maxy well. A few years ago at the AFHS reunion at The American Legion he and I had a brief conversation. A few months later I recieved an e-mail from him. He was particularly interested in the fact that I had spent my entire 20 year career in the Submarine service. He inquired about daily Submarine life and was very complimentary as to my service. I responded with what he asked about, but now I wish that I had corresponded with him more. My deepest regrets to the family and friends of a fine man. The world has lost a true gentleman.

Dear Kathy,Jon,Denise,David and Family,
I was so sorry to hear of Waxy's passing. He was truly a special person who never was to busy to give a great smile and ask you how you were doing. When I first started in Rotary he was the first one to make me feel welcome. He was truly a spiritual person who walked the walk. He was kind, generous and a wonderful American. I can only hope you can find solace in knowing he lived a wonderful life and touched so many people. Our thoughs and prayers are with you.
