Lawrence Ludwig Grove

Old Lyme - Lawrence Ludwig Grove, 76, passed away unexpectedly March 4, 2023, at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital. Lawrence "Larry" was born May 3, 1946, in Waterbury, to Eugene A. Grove and Helen L. Kongsted Grove. Larry graduated from Clarkson University in Potsdam, N.Y. with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering. He moved to the Allentown area of Pennsylvania where he worked at General Electric. He received several patents while working as a mechanical engineer. While in Pennsylvania, he married Charlotte Heller, and they lived in Center Valley. They later divorced.

He was recruited by Norelco North American Philips and moved to Lyme. He then started a business called Silver and Wood in East Haddam with close friends Nancy and David. Larry designed and built beautifully crafted wood furniture, chess and backgammon boards, unique jewelry boxes, and bud vases. He participated in many area craft shows including the Hartford Flower Show and the Norwich Rose Art Show. He won awards for his woodworking, including special recognition for a desk that was later displayed at the Old State House gift shop in Hartford. He then was employed by Moeller in Ivoryton.

Besides being mechanically inclined, creative, and a fine woodworker, Larry had a soft heart for animals. At his Lyme home he had horses, goats, a dog, and many cats. In his retirement, he moved to Old Lyme where he lived with and helped his mother, Helen Ingle. After her death, he moved to Solstice Senior Living in Groton.

Larry was a very gentle sweet man, and he will be sorely missed by the many who knew him. He was predeceased by his parents and is survived by his siblings, Carl A. Grove of Venice, Fla., Stephen R. Ingle of Quincy, Mass., Jane E. Platt of Stratford and David J. Ingle of Catonsville, Md.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 18, 2023, at Fulton Theroux, 13 Beckwith Lane, Old Lyme. From 10 to 11 a.m. there will be a time to view pictures and wooden handmade items. Burial to follow service at Duck River Cemetery, Old Lyme. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to ASPCA (to help animals) or to a charity of your choice in Larry's honor.
