I first want to say that I hope this is not an infringement upon the family in any way. I did not know your loved one. I simply read a book review of his recently and wanted to follow up on him. The book was "Black Boss" by John Rozier, which I read maybe a year ago. I am a native of the county the book is based on. I was very glad to read your father's (husband's) review of the book. Your father/husband sound like he was a super Dad and very knowledgeable and helpful teacher to his students. A priceless asset to humanity! Please excuse the intrusion. I was so sorry to learn of his passing! I was not an acquaintance, only that I read an article/review from I think 1983.

Lawrence and I knew each other before going to first grade. We were child hood friends...played together as children. He was always kind. I moved away from Ft. Gaines at age 11, however after 30 years we saw each other again. He told me about his beautiful family and his accomplishment s. We talked about the old days. I will always cherish those moments and the fact that God made it possible for me to see him. "We can never forget our past." Rest in peace, Lawrence.

I extend heartfelt prayers and share in the pain of the loss of such a terrific scholar and educator, Dr. Lawrence J Hanks. Dr. Hanks was not only my adviser at Tuskegee University but was instrumental in broadening my understanding of life, teaching (and holding me accountable to)the necessity of apt preparedness, and to possess an unshakable resolve to be excellent. His undergraduate tutelage in my life was significantly instrumental in my success in achieving graduate levels of study. His contribution to my intellectual growth has left an indelible mark, which I vow to reciprocate in the lives of others as he did for me. May the Hanks family be blessed, comforted, and strengthened in this bereaving season. Dr. Hanks, Tuskegee University salutes you! Well done, good and faithful servant.

To the Hanks Family, Dr. Hanks was a truly amazing Person. He was my professor at Tuskegee from 1989-1991 and he always inspired me to want more and to excel. He was so passionate about teaching and his students. He made us feel like we were one of the family. He gave me an inspirational plaque when I graduated that said to strive for excellence...even when others think what you are striving for is unattainable. That plaque has been everywhere with me as a constant reminder that there is nothing unattainable. Thanks for sharing him with us. He was truly an awesome man. Sorry for your loss.

To my loving and kind family Diane, Shonda, Julius and Mahogany, words can not express the sympathy and the sorrow I feel about losing my cousin Lawrence "Larry" Hanks. He will be greatly missed. He is the role model for what it means to love and cherish your family. He gave himself to mankind in so many ways. His work and commitment to preserving the family history for the Hanks and Turner families will live on forever in addition to his scholarly works and teachings in the area of political science. He touched my heart with his passion and love for family and reuniting with family with his dedication and work in organizing the Hanks and Turner Family Reunions. I am praying for all of you and I will always carry in my heart the great spirit, love and family values that Lawrence exhibited by his character and wisdom. Take care and I will be communicating with you all very soon. Love Always Kimball F. Thornton

Diane and Family,
I am so sorry to hear about the passing of Larry. I have fond memories of Larry as a "student-worker" in the Placement Office at Morehouse College for the late Ben McLaurin. I also remember the visits both of you made when you would stop by the office to see us when the children started college at Morehouse and Spelman. May the comfort of others in this time of sorrow support you and show what a difference one life could make to so many...what a blessing one person could be. With Sympathy,

My heart is so heavy as I think about our loss, but I rejoice in heaven's gain. Dr. Lawrence Hanks gave me so much more than an education; he gave me inspiration, encouragement, and a sense of direction. I am a college professor today in large part because of him. I only hope to follow in his footsteps and touch my students the way he touched my life. You will be missed but not forgotten.

Dr.Hanks was my political science professor at Tuskegee University. Although an education major, Dr. Hanks made political science come alive! He told me once that I should consider changing my major to political science (smile). Dr. Hanks wrote a letter of recommendation for me when I was chosen to study at Vanderbilt University one summer. I credit him for any of my interests in political matters! Dr. Hanks definitely had a positive impact on my life.

"To the Hanks family may God be with you during this time of sorrow. I will always remember how warmly Lawrence welcomed me to IU, particularly when he learned that I received my undrergraduate degree in political science from Tuskegee, the same department that he had chaired prior to coming to IU. I always loved to run into Lawrence on campus, wearing his signature bowtie and that great smile. He always reminded me of those dignified old school HBCU professors. Lawrence was truly a gentleman and a scholar.

I will always remember Dr. Larry Hanks as a good man who loved God, his family and others. He was kind hearted and soft spoken. He was a true ambassador for God. He was a brillant man yet very respectful and humble. He could wear a bow tie. He fought a good fight of faith and held the Lord up in praise all the way back home to glory. May the Lord continue to bless the entire Hanks Family. My prayers and love are with you.
