Lawrence Levitz Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Oct. 4 to Oct. 5, 2009.
LEVITZ, Lawrence Gerald B. Comm. F.C.A. (Gerry) It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of Lawrence Gerald Levitz on Saturday, October 3rd, 2009 at the Ottawa General Hospital. Gerry's legacy will continue through his wife Ingrid (nee Gluzman), daughters Stephanie (Dr. Allan Shefrin), Naomi Ruth and brother Dr. Jamie Levitz (Doreen nee Glassman). He was an adored brother in law, uncle, great uncle, and cousin. His relationship to his father in law Leon Gluzman was unique. Born in Cornerbrook, NFLD, he was the devoted son of the late Ernest and Ida Levitz, and never forgot his Maritime roots. A respected member of the accounting profession, Gerry was Managing Partner of Ginsberg, Gluzman, Fage and Levitz accounting firm (1984-2007) and President of both DFK International and Canada. Gerry's mentorship and leadership skills were not only confined to his family and professional life. He was involved as a board member and served as President on a number of community organizations, most notably as President of the Jewish Federation of Ottawa (2001-2003). Gerry was frequently formally recognized for his commitments to his profession and community among which were the Governor General of Canada's Golden Jubilee Medal (2002), the Ken McQuillan Lifetime achievement award from DFK International, and the Gilbert Greenberg distinguished service award by the Ottawa Jewish Community (2006). Gentleman, patriarch, intellect, advocate, fisherman, sports fan, bridge player and crossword puzzle whizz, family member and loyal friend, his counsel and guidance will be incredibly missed. His life has left a major mark on so many people. His passing will create a tremendous void. Gerry's memory will be a blessing. The funeral service will be held at the Jewish Memorial Chapel, 1771 Cuba Avenue on Monday, October 5th, at 12 noon followed by interment at Jewish Memorial Gardens, Osgoode, Ontario. Shiva will commence at 31 Chinook Cr., Nepean, Ontario, after sundown Sunday October 11, 2009. The family wishes to acknowledge the dedication and care of the medical and nursing team of 5 West at the Ottawa General Hospital Haematology Department. Donations in Gerry's honour may be made to the Ernest and Ida Levitz Memorial Fund, 21 Nadolny Sachs Private, Ottawa, ON K2A 1R9 613-798-4696 ext 232, and by becoming a regular Canadian Blood Donor.

We only learned today of Gerry's passing and were shocked and saddened. We count ourselves lucky to have known you and Gerry and shared many great times while I was active in DFK along with him. He was a great man and teacher, and I learned many lessons of life from him. We hope that you will find strength through your family and good friends.

Though we knew Gerry only briefly having met at Stephanie and Allan's wedding, he left us with an indelible impression of a man well regarded. His warmth, generosity and love for his family and friends was monumental. Our condolences to the family.

Naomi and Family,

Jason and I just wanted to let you know how much you are in our thoughts.
Your father was a wonderful man. I will always recall the fondly conversation he and I had in Puerto Rico, when he taught me about the simple pleasure of a good cigar.
I miss you terribly and wish I was nearer to you now.

Much love, as always,

Amanda and Jason
