LAWRENCE W.
82, of Oakmont, after an extended illness, on Saturday, May 18, 2013. Husband of Barbara; father of Pamela Mayer Hitchcock (Robert), Virginia (the late Michael) McCarthy, and Timothy (Annie) Mayer; grandfather of Catherine McCarthy. An MIT grad, Larry's focus was metallurgy, something forged as a young man aspiring to help build the planes he was fascinated to see flying overhead as a teen during WWII. His father, a Colonel in the US Army stationed in China, Europe and the US, encouraged his interest. Both Larry and his younger brother, Jim, were educated at McDonogh, a military prep school in Baltimore. It was here Larry learned his love of sailing and the water. As a founding member of the Fox Chapel Navy, Larry helped chart, navigate, explore, and enjoy with friends, the waters of the Chesapeake Bay, Caribbean, Atlantic Oceans, and many rivers as both sailor and "Commodore of the Canoes." He played tennis and paddle tennis at the Fox Chapel Racquet Club, where he served as president in 1977. Burial will be private. An open celebration of his life will be held at Fox Chapel Racquet Club on Tuesday, June 4, 2013 from 4-7 p.m. The family invites all friends to join them at that time. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to their local ASPCA or to a charity of one's choice. Arrangements were provided by BURKET-TRUBY FUNERAL HOME CREMATION & ALTERNATIVE SERVICES, INC. Oakmont.
