It's been 8 years + 2 months + 6 days since you went to be with Jesus; I have tears steaming down my face when I remember how you and mama Verlie treated me with so much love and care. Miss you forever and ever.

I just googled my beloved former professor, thinking how much I would like to talk with him today—only to learn he had been gone for seven years. How can this be, when I have felt his presence and heard his laughter so often in recent years?
Verlie, I loved being at your home in Springfield. I remember babysitting your spirited Pete and Julie. Only after my husband and I adopted our Julia did I learn from Larry that Julie was actually Julia.
I loved Larry. When I was 19and first met him, he and I bonded over his loss of a child and my loss of a father. I still think of Larry Peter, that dear child.
Larry was an honorable man, an incredibly generous man. My heart is broken to think I will never hear his voice again. I am deeply grateful to have had him in my life. Thanks be to God.

My thoughts and prayers are with the Nelson family in their time of sorrow. I majored in History at UNA and graduated in 1997. I took two classes with Dr. Nelson and they were some of the best classes I had. But aside from school, it was his love of his students that I will never forget. He touched my life with grace and elegance and I will never forget him.

Dear Ms. Verlie, Julia, Josh, Pete and the rest of the Nelson family. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you. Dr. Nelson will always have a special place in my heart, not only did I enjoy leading about History, but also learned how to live the way Jesus wants us to live. "Less Larry...More Jesus" Never did I understand those words as much as I did once you spoke about your dad Pete. So glad you are all a part of our UNA family. Forever in our hearts. Say hi to Jesus for me Dr. Nelson. Love to all, Peggy-Sue and Daniel Griffin

The legacy and influence of Dr. Nelson is broad and deep, and will continue to live on among many generations of students, friends and even strangers. Whether it was his warm smile and encouraging word, or his insightful and intellectual argument of historical or political thought, Dr. Nelson provoked positive and fundamental change in people's lives. He was a mentor to many and a friend to all who knew him. The man I am today, and the family that I am blessed to have, owe much to the influence and mentoring Dr. Nelson provided to me while a student majoring in History & Government at Evangel College (1978 to 1982). We are blessed in having known Dr. Nelson. May God's peace and comfort be upon the Nelson family during this difficult period, and may we be comforted in knowing that Dr. Nelson is at peace and at home in the presence of our Lord. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Thank you Dr. Nelson for allowing me to stay in your class even though I was in the wrong one. To me, it turned out to be a blessing to get to know you. Words cannot express your great character and deep caring for others. I am an older student, and you made me feel confident and excited about my studies. This world has lost a great soul; I guess our sweet Lord needed you, and decided it was time you came home.

I admire Dr. Nelson's stand for Christ. I loved his class, "History of Religion in the US". I learned so much about the Christian roots of this country. I know he has influenced thousands of young students, one of which was my daughter. She dearly loved him too as did everyone. God bless all of you.

Though I never met Dr. Nelson, I am in awe of his accomplishments and the impact he had on his students. My cousin's son was a student of his at North Alabama and said he was one of the sharpest mind's he'd ever met. To impress this young man is no easy task. I wish I had the honor of being a student in one of his classes. God Bless you and your family. No doubt, Dr. Nelson is rejoicing at this very moment in Heaven. This man will be missed but oh what a legacy he has left behind via all those young minds he's influenced. God bless you all.

Dr. Nelson was unforgettable. He was my first and favorite college professor. He shown a light so bright that it will still shine for generations to come as his students pass down what he taught them to their children and grandchildren. He will be greatly missed and never forgotten. Unfortunately due to a youth trip I will be unable to pay my respects in person.
