Lawrence Petit Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 4, 2013.
Surrounded by his loving family, Lawrence "Larry" Logan Petit died Sunday, Sept. 1, 2013, at Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester, after a short battle with esophageal cancer.

Larry was born Oct. 2, 1954, in Wabasha, to Logan and Marilyn (Ryan) Petit of Plainview. Larry grew up on a large family farm south of Plainview, where his musical roots originated. After graduating from Plainview High School in 1972, he worked at the All American Coop in Elgin and Soundworld in Rochester. Spurred by his love for music, fix-it nature, and outgoing attitude, he enrolled at Red Wing Technical School for musical instrument repair, which lead to his first business, Petit Electronics. During his nights and weekends, Larry played for several bands, including but not limited to Willow Lane, Night Shift, American Flyer, Booker Mini Band and the Reunion Band. In 1999, he founded Petit Music, which is to this day one of the most influential piano stores in the region. Larry was also very beneficial to the community as a member of the Booker Mini Foundation.

He proudly called Faith United Methodist Church his home church. In his downtime, he enjoyed hunting, camping, boating and listening to music.

Larry is survived by his father and stepmother, Logan and Lu Petit of Plainview; children, Adam (Rachel) Petit of Forest City, N.C., and Natalie (Joseph) Berres of Rosemount; one grandson, Isaac Petit; six sisters, June (Don) Tlougan of St. Charles, Mary (Steve) Motske of Huntington Beach, Calif., Susan Niesen of Elgin, Rita (Edward) Schultz of Rochester, Margaret (Dr. William) Marshall of Rochester and Brenda Petit of Simpson; five brothers, Joseph (Nancy) Petit, Patrick (Diane) Petit, Robert (Barb) Petit and Bernard Petit all of Plainview and Mark (Colleen) Petit of Rochester.

Larry was preceded in death by his mother, Marilyn (Ryan) Petit and his brother, John Petit.

The funeral service will be held Friday, Sept. 6, at 11 a.m. at Faith United Methodist Church in Eyota, with the Rev. Mark Woodward officiating.

The visitation will be Thursday, Sept. 5, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Schad & Zabel Funeral Home in Plainview, and one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.

On Sunday, Sept. 8, the Booker Mini Foundation will host a fundraiser for Larry at the Wicked Moose in Rochester from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. Please attend and give Larry the party he wanted.

Schad & Zabel Funeral Home in Plainview is in charge of the arrangements. schadandzabelfuneralhomes.com

The music community of SE MN is grieving the loss of a wonderful man and musician. I played the cow bell with the Booker Mini Band when they were trying to get the audience involved. May the music Larry made live on in our hearts.

Larry was such a good, sweet man. He was so excited to let us use his backyard for my daughters wedding that's coming up. He said "I had never thought of a wedding there, that will be such a happy thing to have." He always treated my daughter, Nikki and her fiance, Devon, so well and with such affection. My thoughts, prayers, and love are with all his family and friends.
