Lawrence Rohe Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 18, 2015.
Lawrence V. "Larry" Rohe, 94, of Dushore, died Tuesday, May 12, 2015, at Towanda Memorial Hospital.

Born September 7, 1920 in Cherry Mills, he was a son of the late George R. and Sarah Sick Rohe.

Larry served his country honorably in the U.S. Navy during WW II. He joined the Navy in 1938 and served five years in the Pacific Theatre on various squadron cruisers, including, the USS Salt Lake City, the USS Medusa, and the USS Luzon, The USS Salt Lake City was known as the Original One Ship Fleet and Public Enemy No. 1 to the Japanese, due to the record number of victims. It was the Navy's oldest heavy cruiser. Larry survived the attack on Pearl Harbor and left the Navy in 1948, after 10 years of dedicated service and training as a Chief Fire Control Petty Officer. Larry was proud of the sacrifices he made for his country while serving in the military. He was a life member of the American Legion Post 996, Dushore.

Larry was employed at Sylvania for over 25 years, where he had an illustrious career. He was in charge of all the electronic services in the Towanda plant. Larry developed many firsts at Sylvania, including, the first induction heating retreat of tungsten rod in excess of 2000 degrees C, and a fine wire electronic etching procedure for tungsten, just to name a few.

Larry was known for his strong values, self discipline and overall level of achievement. He was a man who had a fine attention to detail, including, his pre-work in preparing for a project. His outstanding work ethic was evident in literally everything he did, including his garden (which was pristine) and all his other activities, be it work associated or hobbies. Larry never completed a task until he had achieved exceptional results. He was an avid gardener who also enjoyed woodworking, reading and cooking.

Surviving are a son Philip Rohe of Round Rock, Texas; four daughters Mary Anne Rohe of Mesa, Ariz.; Marguerite (Larry) Allis of Temple, Texas; Marlene Rohe of Sayre, and M. Theresa (Anthony) Johnson of Towanda; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a companion Dorothy Adams of New Albany; several nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Elizabeth "Tootie" (Joe) Yankalunas; and a great-nephew, Eric Yankalunas.

Sincere condolences to Larry's family. Larry was a great guy to know and work with. He had a great sense of humor and was very patient with "new" people coming to Sylvania. His obit demonstrates a great tribute to this great guy.
