Lawrence Thorsen Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jan. 3 to Jan. 7, 2024.
Conrad - On December 26, 2023, we lost one of the good ones, Lawrence J. Thorsen. Larry was born in 1953, in Poplar, Montana, to Robert and Donna Thorsen.

Larry and his family moved to Great Falls when he was in high school. There he met his lifelong love, Beth George. They married in 1977, soon after Larry graduated from college with a degree in Music Education.

Larry was a musician's musician. He and his brothers started the Sundogs rock and roll band in the cold storage room of his Dad's music store when he was twelve. The brothers later formed Insanity's Children, and the Thorsen Brothers Band, playing all over Montana. Larry never tired of performing music and continued to play in various rock bands in Chester and Conrad with friends.

Larry taught band and choir for Chester and Conrad public schools for over 30 years. His students called him "Mr. T." He was at his best, and happiest, when teaching his students to sing, play instruments, and love music. Chester and Conrad High Schools were well known for having the best Pep Bands at area sporting events when he taught there. If Larry knew in advance that a competitor sports team would not have their own Pep Band at an event, he and his students would learn their school's song and play it for the team and crowd.

Larry loved walleye fishing, making stained glass art, The Griz, cool cars, and motorcycles. He taught motorcycle safety classes all over Montana for nine summers. A photo of him riding can still be seen on one of the Montana Motorcycle Safety promo posters. Larry and Beth rode to Sturgis on his Harley, and spent many hours riding in Glacier Park and on motorcycle poker runs.

Surviving the deep loss of Lar are his loving wife Beth; brothers Dave, Tom, Jim, Steve, Dan, Charles, and their families; sisters Patrice and Peggy and families; father Robert; sister-in-law Bobbe (Calvin) Lance; doggo Tilly; and a large loving group of Eve and Thorsen relatives. Larry was preceded in death by his brother Bob, mother Donna, and grandparents Joseph and Lorena Eve.

Larry was a simple man. He was gentle, kind, loyal, generous, and hilarious. He loved his family, friends, students, God, and country beyond measure. At Larry's request, no formal services are planned. The best way for family, friends, and students to pay their respects to Larry is to support music education in schools, take a motorcycle safety course before they ride free, and to adopt and love a homeless pet when they can.

Oh gosh I have soo many memories of Larry...first in high school at Freat Falls Central where He and his brothers played for our school dances. Most favorite times were just spending time with he and Beth and Elvis at their home. Mike and I would go over and Mike and Larry would play guitar...well, Larry was teaching Mike...we would have cocktails, dinner sometimes...but just visiting...Conrad was small so Mike and I would walk or ride our bikes. Family reunions were always fun. Beth my heart is with you...you and Larry were just the perfect couple...like you were just born to be together.
Thorsen family...I love you all...family...the best...
Our love and hugs to all of you...I always hold you in my heart...Dylan and I send big hugs and love...and I can just see Larry up in Heaven and Mike soo excited to see him ... and the two of them playing their guitars

I am so sad to hear this. Larry T was truly one of a kind. He was so nice, kind, intelligent & funny!! I worked with him with the motorcycle safety program. He was one of the coaches that created the foundation of the program at Northern. He fully believed in what he was teaching & he cared for every student. He was one I could always count on - be it to cover a class, give me some honest feedback or a pep talk. He was a great mentor & fellow coach to everyone.

He's up in heaven with the other coaches we've lost & running the greatest class there ever was.

I´m deeply sorry for the family and many friends of Larry. As a music teacher, his talent and dedication were an integral part of many kids´ lives, including my two sons. Larry was an advocate and teacher of motorcycle riding skills and safety.
I can still see him playing the trumpet in the pep band with the Conrad kids. And watching him pull away from the curb on his Harley, all decked out in all the proper riding gear. Having fun. Rest well my friend. You deserve it.

I will always remember the fun times Larry and I had taking kids to District and State Music Festivals. He always put his whole heart into helping each student perform their best and all the students loved and respected him. They wanted to make him proud because they knew he genuinely cared about each one of them. I would definitely say I became a better musician through our collaborations. Larry was such an amazingly talented guy and I am so lucky for the special memories I have of him.

Mr. T was a big influence in my life! He encouraged me to follow my own dreams of singing! With his help, I went to music school and graduated with my degree in voice! He will forever be remembered and missed dearly!

I´m very saddened by this. Mr T was a very big influence in my life. He was a teacher, mentor and friend to me. I had the pleasure of being his student and also a bandmate in the early 80´s. The world is truly a worse place without him.

Rest in peace Mr T. We will miss you dearly.

Mr. Thorsen taught me bass guitar, something that I will always treasure. I especially loved playing in the CHS pep band.

Mr. Thorsen's 1st year in Conrad was my Senior year. He was a fun teacher who made his students strive to be better. Encourage students to be a part of band & support them as much as possible. Music lasts a lifetime. Sorry for your loss.

Mr. Thorsen was my band teacher throughout high school, 1986-1990. With his leadership, we had an awesome pep band and each year I participated in State and District honor bands. Mr. Thorsen's talent for playing each instrument was impressive. He was always smiling and easy going and it was obvious he loved his career and students. He truly was one of the good ones and will be fondly remembered!
