LAWRENCE R.
On Monday, June 2, 2014, Larry Werner, 80, after a courageous three year battle with pancreatic cancer, passed away at his home in Franklin Park with family surrounding him. A native of Freedom, PA, Larry was a well-regarded senior public relations executive with a 50-year career in rendering advice to community and business leaders. Larry is the son of the late Charles and Pauline (Short) Werner; and brother of five siblings, the late Patricia Werner, Rita (Joseph) Kasunic, Raymond (Susan) Werner, Bernie (Suzanne) Werner, and Kathleen (Bob) Millward; he is the beloved father of Lawrence, Jr. (Bobbie), Victor, Pamela (David) Griffith, and Bern (Jeannie); grandfather (Pops) to 11 of their children, including one deceased, and two step-grandchildren; he is the loving husband of Mary (Hatton) Werner; and stepfather to Lisa Werner; Larry was previously married to Joy Werner, the mother of their children. Larry was a devoted uncle, friend, neighbor and colleague to many. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren, and taught them how to get the most out of life and stressed the importance of relationships through his love and generosity. He served his country in the Korean War as a Corporal in the U.S. Army. He graduated from Duquesne University with a B.A. in Communications and Minor in Science, and from Carnegie Mellon with a M.A. in English. He began his career as a reporter with United Press International followed by public relations and senior management roles with U.S. Steel Corporation and Equibank before serving as Executive Vice President of Ketchum Public Relations in Pittsburgh from 1984 until 2001. Up until this year, Larry continued to consult with clients. Among his many professional acknowledgements, Larry was recently recognized by retired U.S. Army public affairs officers for his work in preparing them prior to their senior level assignments at the Pentagon or other high level assignments. An advisor to numerous corporate and non-profit Boards, Larry was best known for his work in crisis management including being a member of the post-assessment evaluation team for the Exxon Valdez disaster. He received the Public Relations Society of America's first Lifetime Achievement Award in Pittsburgh. Larry was an active volunteer for numerous organizations, an advocate of the arts and served on the Boards of the Ronald McDonald House, where he was past president, Boy Scouts of America Pittsburgh Chapter, Civic Light Opera, Pittsburgh Shakespeare Festival, Seton Hill University and on the Advisory Board of the Pitt Jazz Seminar. He was also involved in fundraising for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Western Pennsylvania. To the Werner family: We send our deepest condolences and are thinking of you. The obit in the Post-Gazette was but a small tribute to a great man who obviously had an indelible impact on so many, not the least of which was his son and my good friend Bern. What a gift that this great man touched so many and led a good life. ~The Colletti Family (Jack, Nicole, Nicholas and Rachel).

To Mary and the big, wonderful Werner family,

We are all so blessed for having the honor of knowing Larry in our respective lifetimes. He was my best friend for almost 50 years and Anne has known Larry for over 40 years. He was always there for his family and friends, providing wit, wisdom and, most importantly, love. We know Larry is now sharing his great stories with the Lord and we will miss him dearly.

Love and prayers to all,

John and Anne Smith

I have only fond memories of Larry, even though, as a reporter, I caused him enormous grief. He always met the situation with aplomb. Later as a public relations competitor, my admiration for him grew even greater. Always a gentleman. I hope the entire Werner family can take comfort in knowing how well he was regarded by all who knew him.

Larry and Bobbie;
It was through you that I had the opportunity to meet your father. What a Great Guy! Larry made you feel comfortable in any situation, and was well versed on many topics. It was an honor and a privilege to know him, as well as to be considered a friend. If there is anything I can do, do not hesitate to ask.

Mary and family -- Hundreds of PR professionals around the country are sharing the loss of a mentor and friend. Larry's "client first" example and ability to focus on key issues taught us all to be not just better but the best! Sharing your loss and sending thoughts and prayers.

What can anyone say about Larry that would do him justice ? He was a fine example as a consummate professional, but even that pales in comparison to the example he set as a human being. I have never met anyone in my life who treated everyone around him with more respect and consideration than he did. There are far too few like him. Anyone and everyone fortunate enough to have known him will miss him deeply. To have been among his friends was and is a great honor that I will always cherish.

I had the pleasure of working with Larry in the Public Relations department of U. S. Steel in the 70's. He was a great boss and a wonderful person. Always kind, professional, and funny. He will be missed!
