Dear Linda and Mya
To say that Pete and you have had a profound impact on my life is the most sincere and deepest understatement I can imagine. Peter's indirect and your direct active mentorship and patience have guided my career for almost 20 years since we first met on the streets of Yogyakarta in 2005.
Pete will be deeply missed while his legacy and impact on our lives and the subsequent lives of those we in turn have impacted is extraordinary.
My sincerest condolences,
Gabriel Thoumi from Vienna

Dear Linda,
So many memories of Pete, the first, I think, dating back to one of the seminars on Southeast Asia for the business community to which you invited me. I recall being dazzled by the depth, erudition, wisdom and humor of Pete's analysis of the region, ranging from 'hot' vs 'cold' cultures to political implications, drawing on geography, ethnography, history and personal experiences. Pete's analyses and approach reminded me of the importance of area expertise, confirmed my commitment to Southeast Asia and its comparative analysis, and reinforced the importance of fieldwork. Most of all, as a young scholar I always felt appreciated by Pete. Indeed, I recall with great gratitude your telling me that, after one of my visits to you all, Pete said that I reminded him of himself as a younger man. No greater compliment....
With much love and thanks

Dear Linda and Mya,
I recall with deep affection the time I had the privilege of meeting Pete. It was during a dinner you kindly hosted for some of us, your former students. Pete's gentle, attentive manner left a lasting impression on me. He listened intently to our stories, interjecting with his insightful words and warm smiles.
One moment that stands out vividly in my memory is when Pete picked up on a casual joke I made about living a simple life. He sought me out later to share his thoughts, emphasizing the interesting nature of my life. It's rare to encounter someone with such a profound ability to positively impact everyone they meet, and Pete undoubtedly had this gift. His life was a testament to making a positive difference in the lives of others.
The remarkable life he led, and the numerous lives he touched, are a true reflection of his extraordinary character. I have immense respect for this quality and am deeply saddened by your loss.
Please know that you are in my thoughts during this difficult time. Please take care of yourselves.
With heartfelt condolences,
Arif

We send our condolences to Mya, Linda Kelcie, Peter, Betsy, and all extended family
Pete though no longer with us yet abiding within each of us:
We treasure the kindling of his extraordinary gifts offered so generously of insight, deep listening, connection, humor and humility - lighting one's own fire of possibility. Kindling as crackling as the scotch logs which Pete twisted to stoke the Barton Drive fireplace embers during one of the pumpkin carving gatherings of Southeast Asian orbiting friends and my fellow students.
Kit: Pete's work overlapped with my father's in the 1960's through SEADAG meetings and other associations. Our first conversation in Ann Arbor in 1985 wove Thailand, Arthur Rackham, the Gilbert & Sullivan tune "With Catlike Tread" and the woods outside into a seamless fabric of wonder and engagement. His camera was always ready to record moments of these gatherings, especially Mya's exquisite child ones. Ready always was Pete to expand a foregone conclusion and make us all think harder, deeper, leaner.
Many years later, while on a boat trip with Pete, Linda and Mya to the Rakhine Pagodas of Mrauk-U in Myanmar, the engine failed, the boat ran aground. Pete kept everyone posted on details of repair as we sang and talked Burmese history and culture far into the night.
We carry forward with gratitude his spirit and all that he shared with us.

Dear Linda and Mya, I remember several decades ago stumbling into the three of you on a busy street in Hanoi late one afternoon and we decided to go to dinner together. Bicycles were still the dominant mode of transport on the streets. I regret that we haven't stay more in touch since then. On reading Pete's obituary I only now realize what a Renaissance man he was. We send our heart-felt condolences. John and Minfong

Linda, my deep condolence to you and Pete's family. Fortunate to have met Peter thru you just after your marriage.
He is kind and learned, learned interesting about Chinese pottery found in Krai. Also enjoyed a few days of peace in the forest cottage which was built by Pete, saw raccoons coming to the window for feeds. Also enjoyed the gamelan orchestra at University of Michigan. May he rest in everlasting peace. Tuan Gee

I first met Pete around 2002. Was instantly a fan. Over the 2 years at Michigan, I must have met him countless times. He was always irreverently funny and a gracious host who loved his wine. I was grateful for the opportunity to see him last year and was glad that he got to meet my family. He lived such an amazing, interesting life filled with adventure and travel. We are deeply sorry that he has left us.

As a University of Michigan student, I had classes with both Pete and Linda, and they were among the best teachers I ever met. Quite a bit of what I now know, understand, or find interesting about the world, comes from them.
I once did well on an exam in Pete's class, and felt I had mastered the material-but then he handed out a sheet with ideal, complete answers to all the questions, and I realized that behind what seemed like a gentle, pleasing stream of information in his lectures, there was a virtual Niagara of knowledge.
Even better than classes were visits to their home. Deans, senior professors, visiting dignitaries, or 18 year old newly arrived foreign students-all felt comfortable there, sitting on giant pillows; wandering around the house discovering troves of books, art, artifacts...a Papuan war club sitting in the rack along with the pool cues, Buddhist temple bells hanging from the eaves of Pete's beautiful Swiss chalet-style house; savoring perfect food, Asian and American, exotic or reassuringly familiar.
Pete lived at the center of a charmed world, that his presence made so. He thrived in whatever era he inhabited, but I loved his fabulous tales of the past, the glimpses of his life back in the long-gone post-colonial days of Southeast Asia. It was a rare privilege to know the old Asia hand, Renaissance man, and wonderful person that he was.

It has been decades since I met him for the first time. Remember the many discussions about Asia whenever we got together at Pete and Linda's home. Learned something new every time. Wonderful kind person, intellectual giant. Will never forget him. May he rest in peace. G. Dufey, Emeritus Ross, UoM
