BURKE, Lemuel Gulliver On Tuesday, January 28, 2003 Lemuel Gulliver (83) passed away peacefully at home after a courageous battle with a series of strokes. "Gullu" as he was affectionately known, is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Grace Hamsa; older brother, Samuel of England; older sister, Josephine of Ottawa; two younger sisters, Eileen of Winnipeg and Chand of Bombay and a younger brother, Arial of Lahore. His family includes his six children, Samson, Roseline, Noeline, Christopher, Eileen and Grace; 18 grandchildren, Rebecca, Bobby, Jesse, Alison, Kayne, Chelsea, Leila, Courtney, Dakota, Andrew, Kristoffer, Samson, Dustin, Candice, Benjamin, Marissa, Simon and Maegan; four great-grandchildren, Paige, Gabriella, Lillian and Christopher. He also had two foster children, Maria and Patrick. "Gullu", was born in Lahore, India on December 29, 1919. He received a B.Ed. B.A. (Honors) and two M.A.'s in History and English. He moved his family to Spirit River, Alberta in 1959 and worked as a teacher for many years before retiring in Edmonton. Gullu and Hamsa opened their home to many new immigrants from abroad. They were founding members of several Asian support groups particularly devoted to the Asian Christian Community where Gullu played an integral role as a founder and supporter. Gullu has touched the lives of hundreds of people through his tireless efforts to welcome new immigrants and facilitate their transition to Canada. He will be remembered for his passion for Biblical scholarship and his unending generosity and love of people. Relatives and friends may pay their respects at the Chapel of Howard & McBride Westlawn, 16310 Stony Plain Road, on Saturday, February 1 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and on Sunday, February 2, 2003 from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. with Funeral Services to be held on Monday, February 3, 2003 at 12:00 noon at The First Asian Christian Community Church, 3530-91st Street, Edmonton.
