LEN BARRY Singer – Songwriter – Record Producer If you were a big Philadelphia music fan back in the 1960's then chances are you turned up the volume when the sugary soulful voice of homegrown legend Len Barry hit the airwaves with one of his many worldwide hits. Born Leonard Borisoff, Barry broke big into the music business as the lead singer of Philly's Dovells when 1961's "The Bristol Stomp" hit #2 on the Billboard charts earning the group a gold record. Barry quickly followed that up with another hit record, "You Can't Sit Down" which peaked at #3 on the Billboard chart. As a Dovell, Barry toured with James Brown and made a film appearance in the movie "Don't Knock the Twist" with Chubby Checker. Barry had even greater success after leaving the group, when his 1965 song "1-2-3" which he also penned, hit #2 on The Billboard Hot 100 and #3 in the UK, earning him another gold disc and a Grammy Award nomination for best contemporary rock 'n' roll male vocal performance of the year. Barry became a huge singing sensation in the UK, toured the UK with the Motown Revue as well as featured performances at The London Palladium and Royal Albert Hall. He also appeared on "Top of the Pops" and thrilled fans with guest appearances on Dick Clark's "Bandstand" as well as "Shindig" and "Hullabaloo." Barry was an international singing star but was also a prolific songwriter and record producer, writing hit singles "Zoom" for Philadelphia's Fat Larry's Band and "Love Train" for Booker Newberry III. Barry died on November 5th 2020 and is survived by his son, Spencer and daughter Bia along with grandchildren Baye and Jack and daughter-in-law Helicia and son-in-law Bob.

"The boys from Bristol are sharp as a pistol when they do the Bristol Stomp."

I just heard that song yesterday which always makes me think of Len. Here is a photo of Len when bartending at Philly's Khyber Pass back around 1979.

My wife was watching tv and a commercial had your dad´s song of 1-2-3. I didnt even know the name of the song, I had to do a lyric search. I have 1500+ songs on my playlist but as soon as I heard that song it brought a smile to my face, I thought I have to download that song, it was a great song when I was young. Still is. It´s a song I like to sing to myself but I haven´t heard in a long while. I looked up the singer, thought it might be Motown, but I was wrong. Stumbled on this obituary sorry for your loss, but your dads legacy of that song will last forever.

RIP Mr. Barry ✝
I like your song 1, 2, 3.
That song represents to me and the black and white videos on you tube show a America of baseball, hot dogs, apple pie and Chevrolet, at that time, of good clean cut music.
Thanks for good music like 1, 2, 3, and thanks for your contributions to American musical history.

I just learned about Len's passing. He was a great talent whose song 1-2- 3 was a favorite of mine. May his son and daughter know that their Dad was a music icon. He has many admirers who still love his songs. I am very sorry to hear that Len has left the stage too soon. AJ

As I write this, I'm listening to 1-2-3. I got to know Len pretty well when he bartended at the Khyber Pass back in the early 80s when I lived around the corner. A great bartender and person. Gregarious, funny. Loved listening to his stories about music and playing basketball at Overbrook HS. Very sad to hear of his passing. RIP.
