Leo McKenna Obituary

McKenna, Leo Francis 80, of Batavia and formerly of Oswego passed away Sunday, April 7, 2013 at Delnor Community Hospital in Geneva. He was born March 26, 1933 in Providence, RI the son of Charles and Avis (nee Wilmot) McKenna. He was united in marriage to Peg Anderson September 6, 1958 in Providence, RI. Leo graduated from Providence College. He joined the United States Army and served for two years. He continued his education at Northwestern University obtaining his MBA. Leo began his career at Montgomery Wards in transportation management where he worked for 28 years. Following his retirement Leo worked at the Fox Bend Country Club. Leo was active within his community and his church. He was an altar server though college, was a member of Boy Scouts of America and adult leader, a 4th degree Knights of Columbus and life member, taught religious education at St. Paul's in Gurnee, IL and St. Ann's Oswego, IL, facilitator of baptism preparation, served on the board of directors at First Tee of Aurora and Fox River Valley and also served on the board at Community Association Leadership, Chicago Traffic Club, and ITOFCA. Following all of Leo's activities he still managed to find time for his favorite pastime golf. He is survived by his wife Peg; a son, Steven (Britta) McKenna of Batavia; son-in-law, Robert Schmidt; five grandchildren, Kyle McKenna of Chicago, IL, Owen (fiancée Natalie Pounovich) McKenna of Tempe, AZ, Andrew Schmidt of Batavia, Jonathan Schmidt of Batavia, and Jordan Schmidt of Batavia; nieces and nephews, Paul (Kathy) McKenna of Roseville, CA, Denise (Larry) Giffin of Gilroy, CA, Bob (Suzelle) McKenna of Manchester, NH, Kevin and David Piatek of Hope, RI and Kristen (John) Fox of Portland, ME, along with many other nieces and nephews and a special friend, Lucy McCloud. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his daughter, Nancy Schmidt, and a brother, Charles Oliver McKenna. Visitation will be held 4:00 until 8:00 P.M. Wednesday, April 10, 2013 at Moss Family Funeral Home 209 South Batavia Ave. Batavia, IL. Funeral services will begin with prayers from the funeral home at 10:00 A.M. Thursday, April 11, 2013 before proceeding to Holy Cross Catholic Church 2300 Main Street, Batavia to celebrate Mass at 10:30 A.M. Interment will follow at West Batavia Cemetery in Batavia. Memorial contributions may be directed to First Tee of Aurora and Fox River Valley or Fox Valley Volunteer Hospice.
