To the Carpenter family, I remember as a little girl meeting a man they called "walking tall",he was bigger than life. He would become my "uncle leon". My best memory of him would be the "catfish pond". The summer I was 11, Heath was 9, and Christy was 14, Daddy and Leon decided to take us to the catfish pond. I think that we used about a thousand worms that day. Heath and I could not keep the fishing line in the water. Leon would patiently worm the hook, knowing that he couldn't move because it would be two seconds before we would need another one. I can imagine that Daddy and Leon would have much rather been in a little fishing spot away from the commotion, but they stuck it out. I will greatly miss the man they called "walking tall" and I know that he is up in heaven at the perfect "fishing spot" waiting for the "one".

Dear Cheryl, I did not have the pleasure of meeting Leon, but having the privilege of knowing you gave me a picture of the kind of man Leon was. He must have been a fun loving, caring individual with a heart of gold, and that was proven by the wonderful things said about him at the memorial. I am here if you need anything. You and your family will be in my thoughts and prayers. Love you.

As other Amateur Radio operators have mentioned, Leon with his distinct voice will be missed on the airwaves. He had many friends, that he had never met, throughout the country. I was one and he will be missed in Minnesota.

I was really sorry to learn of Leon's passing. Although we never met face to face, we talked many times over the years on Amateur Radio and I always looked forward to our chats. There was never a doubt who it was when that "big voice" simply said, Hey Ed. My condolences to the family and may God comfort you during this time.

Carpy, as all of us who grew up with him will be greatly missed by all who were a part of his life. Our THS class of 1961 will not be the same. Little did we know that this past May's reuion would be his last one here on Earth. But we are all looking forward to that Heavenly reunion and know that he will be waiting for us at Jesus's feet. May he soar like the Tatum Eagle he was, as he is now free of pain. May God continue to bless his family and friends who loved him and will miss him.
