Leon Patrick Ciferni Active in his Berkeley Heights community, devoted father and grandfather Leon Patrick Ciferni, 79, formerly of Berkeley Heights, N.J., passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 18, 2016, with his family by his side. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the visitation today, Monday, June 20, from 6 to 8 p.m. and Tuesday, June 21, from 4 to 8 p.m., at Paul Ippolito Berkeley Memorial, 646 Springfield Ave., Berkeley Heights. He earned a bachelor's degree from Columbia University and graduated from Fordham University School of Law. Leon had a long career as a senior bank attorney at Chemical Bank and later at NatWest Bank USA, where he was senior vice president and general counsel. Leon was an active member of the Berkeley Heights community, serving on the planning board as well as chairman of the board of adjustment, and on the township committee. He also served a term as mayor of Berkeley Heights. He was a strong supporter and board member of the Veterans Memorial Park restoration. Leon was also a volunteer with the United Way, and an usher at the Church of the Little Flower in Berkeley Heights and at St. Frances Church in Brant Beach. He previously served on the board of directors at Cabrini Hospital. Leon was a passionate man of many diversified interests. He loved the opera, cars, politics, and cooking both gourmet and traditional Italian meals for his family and friends. He devoured books, was a history buff, and an avid fan of the New York Mets. He enjoyed many years of traveling with his beloved wife, Connie. He had many cherished friends with whom he enjoyed spending time. But most of all, he loved being a devoted father and grandfather. He is survived by his loving children, Susan Kinsella and her husband, Joseph, Claudia Farrell and her husband, John, and Noel Baumann and her husband, Todd; brother, Richard Ciferni and his wife, Nina, and sister-in-law, Paula Tarzian. He is also survived by his cherished grandchildren, Joseph, Rebecca, Nicholas, and Michael Kinsella, Talia, Luke, and Julia Farrell, and Amelia, Anthony, and Natalie Baumann. Leon was predeceased by his beloved wife, Constance, in 2013, and brother, M. John. I attended St. Michael's high school with Leon. He always shared his Latin homework with me, as I was terrible in Latin. Rest in Peace, Leon

We knew Leon and Connie in the 70's and 80's in Berkeley Heights. Leon was an excellent man to have a as a friend. He had a biting wit and many colorful insights into the daily grind of the "Weary Erie" ride into Manhattan.

He was personally committed to making his town the best possible place to raise a family. Making Berkeley Heights into an "Enviable place in which to live" was not just another political slogan for Leon. He lived it.

We will miss you, old pal.

My husband Henry & I worked with Leon at Natwest for many years. He was a kind and helpful person always willing to give of his time and knowledge. We were grateful to be able to call him "friend". Rest in peace Leon - you certainly deserve to after all your years of helping others. May the family take comfort in knowing how well liked and respected their Dad was by all.

There is something special about meeting in retirement and sharing life's stories as "seniors" that quickly binds us together. We want Leon's family to know that his newly found friends at Ocean Pointe with whom he shared his warmth and leisure time will greatly miss his being with us.
God bless him and you, his family. We send prayers for all.

My deepest condolences on the death of Leon to his beloved daughters and the whole family. Our personal and professional friendship lasted for many decades, made possible by our early decision never to discuss religion or politics and never to let anything get in the way of our love for each other.

June 20, 2016

My sincere condolence to the Ciferni family for the loss of your beloved one. May the God of tender mercy and peace strengthen you during this difficult time.

To all who loved Leon (and there are many),

Bob and I met Leon and Connie years ago at Ocean Pointe in Palm Beach Shores, FL where many of us spend several winter months each year.

We enjoyed many meals and parties together over the years. I can fondly remember Leon going go a local bakery each winter to get pastries for us all on St. Joseph's Day. He often arrived with his treasures right after morning water aerobics class, and we enjoyed them while still in the pool, a memorable and special treat.

I also remember his love of opera and his finding opera dinners for us all to attend. Waiters and chefs would sing arias between and after courses. That too is a special memory.

Finally, I remember the memorial service he had for Connie at a local church in Riviera Beach and having "Over the Rainbow" sung for Connie. I will always remember both of them when I hear that song. It was a magical moment.

We will all miss Leon, just as we have missed Connie, but feel comfort in knowing they are together once again. Peace be with them both. Our blessings and prayers are with them.

I came to know Leon when I first started at NatWest Bank USA. Leon always supported me in my Audit, Compliance, and Fraud Investigation roles. He also made time for me to discuss any topic, and provided invaluable advice, even though I did not work in the Legal Department. I was privliged and fortunate to know Leon early in my career. May he rest in peace. My prayers are with the family, and I extend to them my deepest condolences.
