FAIRFIELD ‹ Leon A. Neasbitt, a resident of Fairfield since 1958, passed away on Sept. 10, 2003, following a short stay in NorthBay Medical Center, at the age of 87.
He was born on June 5, 1916, in Coalgate, Okla. He graduated from Coalgate High School. Before entering the military, he served in the Civilian Conservation Corps, Company 834, of Ada, Okla. They provided work at several national parks in the western United States. During World War II, he served on active duty with the highly decorated 44th Infantry Division in the U.S. Army as a staff sergeant in the European Theatre.
After receiving an honorable discharge from the Army, he decided to pursue a career in education. He received a bachelor¹s degree in education with a math major from East Central State College in Ada, Okla., and a master¹s degree in education with a math major from the University of Oklahoma at Norman. He taught at several schools in Oklahoma, and served as principal of Sperry Junior High School in Sperry, Okla., before moving to Fairfield to become the head of the math department at Armijo High School in 1958. He later transferred to Fairfield High School to head the math department when it opened. He actively supported various school clubs and functions. He retired in 1981 after 31 years of teaching.
Leon had many hobbies, including gardening, electronics, antiques, reading and traveling. Mr. Neasbitt, a loving and devoted husband, and father, is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary who was a lifelong school teacher; two sons, Paul Neasbitt of Pioneer, who is a peace officer with the California Youth Authority, and Brian Neasbitt of Vallejo, a teacher at Benjamin Franklin Middle School in Vallejo; two brothers, Harding Hays of El Paso, Texas, and Lincoln Hays of Enid, Okla.; two sisters, Ruby Maher of Oklahoma City and Dovie Bowman of Sulphur, Okla.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Visitation is 5-9 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16, at Bryan-Braker Funeral Home. A funeral will at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17, at Bryan-Braker Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert Hays presiding. Burial will be at the Suisun-Fairfield Cemetery immediately following the service.
