LEONARD HARTL Alburnett Leonard Joseph Hartl, 92, of Alburnett, died Monday, Dec. 17, 2018, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy. A rosary service will begin at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, at 3:45 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 20, where visitation will follow from 4 to 7 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 21, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, Hiawatha, where the family will greet friends one hour before the service. Burial will take place at St. John's Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. Leonard was born July 4, 1926, in Ely, Iowa, to Frank and Lottie (Bednashek) Hartl. He was united in marriage to Betty Buchtela on Nov. 19, 1947, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. He farmed for 30 years and later owned and operated Hartl Plumbing & Electric. Leonard worked as the evening custodian for Alburnett School District and also worked for Mooney Heating & Cooling. Leonard was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church for 30 years. He was also a member of the Lions Club and sat on the board of the Springville Telephone Co. Leonard loved polka music and dancing every week with his wife Betty for about 50 years. Leonard never met a stranger. He was a great story teller. Leonard enjoyed a good game of pinochle and he treasured spending time with his beloved family. Leonard is survived by his wife of 71 years, Betty Hartl of Alburnett; five children, Ruth (Rick) Pierce of Hiawatha, Donna Hanley of Bryant, Ark., Carol Sauer of Marion, Paul (Kathy) Hartl of Central City and Nancy (Randy) McGovern of Anamosa; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and sister, Helen Swenka of Hills. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Clarence and Frank Hartl; and sister, Julia Hromidko.
