Leonard "Lenny" Moore, 88, of East Orange, New Jersey, passed away on November 27, 2023. He was born on October 21, 1935, in Newark, New Jersey. Lenny was a loving and caring family man, known for his warm personality and strong devotion to his loved ones.

Lenny is survived by his daughters, Hafizah Cavell Bennett, Alvah Beander and Thelma Ramsey-Bryant, and his sons-in-law, Leland Bennett and Kevin Bryant. He is also survived by his sister, Marion Bolden, Sheila Manigault, Catherine Watson, and brother-in-law, Sam Manigualt, Willis Hill, and sister-in-law, Wilma Davis, 11 grandchildren, 13 great-grand children, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.. Lenny was preceded in death by his mother, Helen Smith, father, Henry Alexander, wife, Annie Vernice Moore, mother-in-law, Thelma Hill, brother Arthur Smith Jr., Merrill Smith, sister Cynthia Harris, brother-in-law Ronald Harris, brother Lowell Hicks, son-in-law Marvin Beander, brother-in-law Marshall Hill, son Dwain Johnson, and son George Ramsey III.

Lenny proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1954 to 1958. After his military service, he pursued a career as a Physical Education & Health Teacher in the Newark Public Schools. Lenny taught at East Side High School and Weequahic High School, where he also coached track and achieved numerous championships. In 1972, he was honored as Coach of the Year. Lenny retired as Assistant Director of Physical Education and Athletics in 1998. Lenny's dedication and success as an athlete and coach led to his induction into the Newark Hall of Fame, NJSIAA Hall of Fame, Westside Hall of Fame, Weequahic Hall of Fame, and the North Carolina Central University Hall of Fame.

Lenny was an avid lover of jazz music, with a special appreciation for artists like Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Sarah Vaughn, Shirley Horn, and Lorez Alexander. He also had a deep passion for sports, particularly Track and Field. Lenny was well-informed about current events and politics, always staying engaged with the world around him.

Lenny worshipped at St. John's Baptist Church in Newark, New Jersey, where he found solace and spiritual guidance.

The viewing for Lenny will take place on Monday, December 4, 2023, from 4-7 pm at Woody's Home for Services, located at 163 Oakwood Ave, Orange, NJ 07050. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, December 5, 2023, with a viewing at 10 am followed by the service at 11 am at St. John Baptist Church, located at 137 Fairmount Ave, Newark, NJ 07103.

Woody's Home for Services in Orange, New Jersey, is assisting the family with the funeral arrangements.

Lenny Moore will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched. May he rest in peace.

He was the Department Chairperson of PE/HE at Technology HS 25 years ago. He was such a wonderful energy to have in your presence. He and his wife used to stop by Technology HS often after he retired.
