Leonard Wilbur Sommerfeld
October 28, 1921 – August 28, 2015
The family of Leonard Wilbur Sommerfeld, are sad to announce his passing on August 28, 2015 at the Circle Drive Special Care Home. Len was born October 28, 1921 to Wilbur and Greta Sommerfeld, a pioneer family of Saskatoon, SK. He was the third child, the eldest being brother Ron, and sister Gertie; he was then followed by Mildred, Walter and Keith. His family was the most important thing to Dad and he loved nothing better than to spend time with his sisters and brothers, kids and grandchildren. Dad attended Albert School and Tech Collegiate. As a young man, Dad loved music and played many instruments all by ear–the piano, guitar, violin, organ and accordion were second nature to him. In the early years, he, his sister Mildred and friend Oren Wilson formed an orchestra and loved playing for dances. A broken leg in 1938 exempted him from service in the military. In 1940, at his brother's wedding, Dad met the love of his life, a beautiful lady named Sybil Elliott. They married on June 27, 1942 and had 67 wonderful years together. They have two children, daughter Anne (Wilson) and son Clyde. Dad worked for A. A. Murphy, the CP Rail and Goodyear Tire. In 1953, he purchased Market Tire and Battery which he developed into a wonderful business that still thrives today. He loved to help people and gave many people a job, credit or a start in life. Dad could fix anything and loved a project. Finally in 1958, Dad built Mom her dream home which was the centre of family activity for over 45 years. In 1969, he sold the business and retired. He survived bypass surgery at the age of 70 with the hope it would give him ten more years. In 2005, Mom and Dad moved to their condo at Circle Drive Place where they enjoyed living and made many friends. After Mom passed away in 2009, Dad continued on living by himself and managed very well. Of course, he had special people in his life who helped him along the way and we are very grateful for all of them. Dad was a lifetime member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church. He was an amazing father, generous friend, loving husband and endeared grandfather. He always made us proud of who we were and where we had come from. We will miss him so. He was predeceased by parents Wilbur and Greta; his wife Sybil; brothers Ron, Keith and Walter (less than two weeks ago); sister Gertie and husband Steve Burrell; and brother-in-law Bill Novak. Surviving are sister Mildred Novak; sisters-in-law Vera (Ron) and Louise (Keith); daughter Anne (Doug) Wilson; son Clyde (Brenda); four grandchildren; three great- grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; as well as many special nieces and nephews. He adored them all and cherished their visits. A Celebration of Len's Life will be held in Dalmeny at the Heritage Centre, 230 Ross Avenue, Saturday, September 5, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations to Circle Drive Special Care Home, 3055 Preston Avenue, Saskatoon S7T 1C3 or a charity of your choice. Arrangements in care of DALMENY FUNERAL HOME (306-254-2022).

We wish to extend our sincere condolences to Anne and Clyde and families. Len and Sybil were very special friends and neighbors to our parents , Joyce and Alvin Minto. Len and Sybil extended much kindness and hospitality over the years. They loved to entertain. Len and other family members provided wonderful music and Sybil provided a banquet of food on many occasions. Len called us a few months ago to tell us he was "still kicking " and to check on how we were. We hope that your many good memories will help you through your loss.

To Ann and Clyde and families;
It's been a tough year for the family this year. We were so appreciative of the support you gave us so recently when Dad (Walter) passed away, and now that Uncle Len has followed, our losses have become all the more poignant. I shall always cherish the memories of Uncle Len for the musical gift he shared with us at family gatherings, his wonderful smile and willingness to talk with you, and even one special memory of he and his brothers meeting in his garage to pound cabbage in an earth crock for home-made sauerkraut! Please know that our thoughts and love are with you all and I shall forever cherish the many memories of this wonderful man.

So sad to hear of "uncle Leonard"( as I knew him) passing. I have many happy memories of him especially in my young life when we would visit or my dad would have him helping on any number of different "project" often at our farm. I remember him as one of the gentlest men I knew. He always had a smile and time to talk...I can see him in yet in his coveralls working and visiting all the while with my dad, who I know valued him greatly not only as a cousin, but as a trusted friend. I am grateful for my memories of him and hope that all of you memories bring you comfort as well.

To the Family of Len Sommerfeld:
If you were searching for an example of someone who was a "Prince of a Guy", Len would be that person.
Through my Dad, I knew of Len and his brother Ron but when I worked for Oren Wilson, I had the good fortune to get to know Len a lot better.
Len was one of those people who could turn your day around with his ever present smile and engaging persona. So sad that he is gone.
Sincere sympathy.

Anne and Doug:
We are saddened for the loss of your dad. Your dad to me was always Mr. Sommerfeld even though he told me many times to call him Len, I jsut couldn't do that. Mr. Sommerfled was a great man and was always interested in what I was doing in my life, I feel others could say the same. Losing a parent is never easy and we are thinking of you and Clyde and extended family during this difficule time. Stay strong the way Mr. Sommerfelf would want you all to do.
Luv
Hugh and Bernie.
