Leonard Vanwingerden Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 26, 2025.
Leonard Vanwingerden passed away on July 13, 2025, in Somers, Connecticut, at the age of 81. Born on June 22, 1944, in Ridderkerk, The Netherlands, he was the eldest son of Aart and Cornelia Van Wingerden. His life was a remarkable journey marked by resilience, faith, and an unwavering dedication to family, work, and community.

In May of 1948, Leonard immigrated with his parents to the United States, beginning a life that would span continents and decades of meaningful contribution. He spent his early years in various towns across New Jersey-Patterson, Preakness, New Egypt, Mountainview, Pompton Plains, and Allentown-where he became deeply rooted in both family life and the horticultural trade.

In 1963, Leonard returned to The Netherlands and was drafted into the Dutch military. After fulfilling his service, he moved back to Allentown to work on the family farm before relocating to Carpinteria, California to join his father in their horticultural business. In 1968, he moved once again-this time to Oberlin, Ohio-where he co-founded Green Circle Growers with his brother John. This venture marked a significant chapter in his professional life and laid the foundation for future successes.

On November 10, 1976, Leonard became a naturalized citizen of the United States-a milestone that reflected his deep appreciation for the country he had come to call home. In 1981, he settled in Somers, Connecticut where he established Grower Direct Farms, Grower Merchandising, and VW Systems. Growing flowers and vegetable plants wasn't just a profession for Leonard-it was a passion. He was known as a man you worked with, not merely for.

A cherished memento in his office captured this spirit: a framed poster made by his youngest daughter that read, "My hero is my Dad because he takes me out for breakfast, and he works even though he is the Boss." This simple yet profound tribute spoke volumes about the kind of father and man Leonard was.

Leonard's commitment extended far beyond business. He gave generously of himself to causes close to his heart: Ellington Baptist Church, Christian Education initiatives, Springfield Rescue Mission, the Town of Somers, and Double Harvest. His faith was central to his life; he found joy among his many brothers and sisters in the Lord and lived out his beliefs through service.

He leaves behind a large extended family including eight children and fourteen grandchildren. His neighbors in Somers were especially dear to him and brought him great joy throughout the years.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Sunday, August 10, 2025 at Ellington Baptist Church in Ellington, Connecticut. The service will be conducted by Pastor Bill Diggins.

All Len had on earth he left behind because his true treasure was waiting for him in Heaven. To say his life was quite a ride does not do justice to the triumphs and troubles, achievements and failures, joys and sorrows that wove together the rich tapestry of his earthly journey.

May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him. A Memorial Service will be held on August 10, 2025, at 04:00 PM at Ellington Baptist Church 264 Pinney St
