Leroy Harris Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 23, 2025.

HARRIS, Herbert Leroy, 97, peacefully went home to be with the Lord on January 12, 2025. He was born in Macon, North Carolina on October 4, 1927 to the late Willie L. and Grace H. Harris. Leroy was the middle of 5 children, and graduated from the Methodist Children's Orphanage in Raleigh, NC, in 1946. After school, he enlisted in the US Army, and rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant in just 2 years. When his enlistment ended, he landed in Seattle, Washington, where he met the love of his life, Margaret Cline. They were married in Richmond in 1949 and Leroy started working for the S. Galeski Optical Company, where he was a manager for over 35 years. He was a faithful member of Ramsey Memorial United Methodist Church, where he sang in the choir for over 60 years and was in their annual Living Nativity scene in December 2024. Leroy enjoyed baseball, girls' softball and westerns on TV, especially Gunsmoke and playing cards or dominoes. He loved his family immensely and participated in every family event no matter where it was.

Leroy was predeceased in death by his parents, 2 brothers and 2 sisters, numerous nephews and nieces, and his loving wife of 61 years, Margaret. He is survived by his sons, Robert David Harris (Debbie) of Little River, SC, Stephen Douglas Harris of Myrtle Beach, SC, daughters Ann Elizabeth Harris (Jimmy Cale) and Laura Harris Lewis (Terrell), both of Chesterfield, Va. He is also survived by grandchildren Jessica Liss (Leon), Meghan Freyer (Brent), Morgan Moss (Colin), Cameron Surina, Caitlin Largen (Kevin), Sarah Cole and 9 great-grandchildren.

A service of Celebration and Remembrance of Leroy's life will be held at Ramsey Memorial Methodist Church in Richmond on March 15, 2025 at 4:00 pm. Visitation will begin at 3:00. Interment at Dale Memorial Park will be private. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Crater Community Hospice, who helped Dad tremendously.
