Leslie Kovacs Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jul. 26 to Aug. 2, 2008.
OBITUARY DR. LESLIE KOVACS, M.D. F.R.C.P. (C.) Quietly at home, surrounded by his family, passed away on July 23, 2008, after a long illness. He was a loving husband of 60 years to Dr. Agnes Bimbi-Kovacs; an adoring father of Dr. Tom, Kathy, Dr. Julie, and Dr. Susie, and an affectionate father-in-law to Dr. Deirdre Anglin, Barry Litman, and Dr. Steven Shadowitz; and a devoted grandfather to Alexander, Sarah, and Trevor Kovacs; Adam, Gabrielle, and Jonathan Kovacs-Litman; and Sam, Jacob, and Ellen Shadowitz; and first-cousin of Agnes Lustigue, who was like a daughter to him. A tireless, respected internist and endocrinologist, with over 50 years of service to the Royal Victoria Hospital and to his private practice; he was Associate Professor of Medicine at McGill University, a clinician teacher to hundreds of medical students and residents, and mentor to generations of physicians. He was the co-founder of the Metabolic Day Centre (for Diabetic Care). He was the Chairman and Treasurer of the Association of Physicians at RVH, and subsequently, the McGill University Health Centre, for 36 years. He was an examiner for Internal Medicine for the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and an elected representative for Internal Medicine to the Federation des Medecins Specialistes du Quebec. The Federation later named him as their representative to the billing revision committee at the Regie de l'Assurance Maladie du Quebec. He co-authored a significant textbook on Diabetes. His work ethic was exemplary. A great sportsman, Leslie was a Hungarian regional fencing champion, and a terrific skier, skater, tennis player and water-skier. He enjoyed music, fine food, science, animals and nature especially mountains and shorelines. An avid reader, with great expertise in geography, he was an authority on World War II. He was well known for his sense of humor and story telling, always with a Hungarian flair. A brilliant individual who excelled at everything he did, he had a lifelong thirst for knowledge. This wise, kind, and honorable gentleman, a true leader, who has been loved and respected by so many, has requested there be no funeral. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Division of Endocrinology, Royal Victoria Hospital foundation, 514 843-1543, 687 Pine avenue West, Montreal, H3A 1A1.

Daddy,
It is 5 years ago today that you passed away. Despite the time that has gone by, it is still very painful. I miss you and I think about you every day. The tribute to you in the Montreal Gazette with your photo hangs above my desk in my office. You were an amazing father, role model and an incredible force to so many people that knew you. You are always in my heart.

Il va beaucoup me manquer.

Dr. Agnes Kovacs and Family,

We were saddened to learn of the loss of Dr. Leslie, who was Richard's physician for many years and mine for a short time, as we left Montreal almost 40 years ago. You were our first son's pediatrician, and I'll always remember how you and Dr. Leslie were always very caring and concerned for your patients.

You both have set an excellent example for your children, as I see the same caring in Dr. Julie, who has my now 93 year old mother as a patient.

Please accept our condolences on this great loss. We understand the feeling, as my mother-in-law, Leah Singer, passed away less than a month before Dr. Leslie.

May you be spared further sorrow and only have good memories.

To Dr. Agnes Bimbi-Kovacs , Kathy & family. We wish to express our deepest condolences & sympathy on the loss of your husband, father, brother & grandfather. We've only recently heard the sad news that Dr. Leslie Kovacs had passed away. Although he wasn't our doctor none the less he seemed and was a very gentle giving man. My husband & I will never forget the first time we met Dr. Agnes. It was at the hospital after giving birth to my son Romolo. Never in a million years would we have thought that this fine & caring doctor would take the time out of her busy schedule not to mention her own family time to come see us & our newborn child. She truly is and he was a very caring wonderful human beings & great doctors. We feel priviliged to have been blessed with this beautiful, gentle soul.
Take heart doctor Kovacs you had 60 wonderful years with your soul mate & memories that you will treasure & that will last you more than a lifetime. He's in a good place & will be your guardian angel till you both meet up again. May god bless you & your family. Our hearts & love are with you.

It is with great sadness that I have learnt of Dr Kovacs' death. Dr. Kovacs was my mother's doctor for about 35 years and it was very comforting to know that she had a Hungarian doctor with whom she could converse freely.
Dr. Kovacs was also a superb clinician whom I remember well from medical school. He will be dearly missed.

Dear Dr. Agnes, Kathy & family
Our deepest condolences on the loss of the wonderful man that Dr. Kovacs was. There is no such words to describe the pain that our family resent. Dr. Kovacs was much more than our doctor, he was a friend, just like family. He was taking care of all our family more than 45 years with a lot of experience, knowledge and kindness. Whenever we called him, we were sure that he returned our call very fast with good advice by referring to the right specialist. Thanks to him that I'm still alive! He also had a very good sence of humor, remembering that laughing is the best medecine. If all the doctors would be as he practiced, the whole world would be a better place. With our love always, Dr. Kovacs will be remembered.

As for so many, my heart sank when I heard of Dr. Kovacs' passing. He and his wonderful wife were a part of our family for over forty years; from my eldest brother Jimmy down to my youngest nephew. From helping both my father and myself through each of our battles with cancer, to just being there whenever we called him, he was a constant reminder of the goodness and compassion of which people are capable and should aspire to.
Our deepest sympathies go out to Dr.Bimbi and all of your children, especially dear Kathy.
May he rest in peace, it has surely been well deserved.

Dear Kathy and the Kovacs Family,

We were both so saddened to hear of the passing of Dr. Kovacs. He has been our doctor for the past 30 years or so and we have come to love him like a member of our family. As a matter of fact, the last time we saw him about 6 months ago, he was visibly not well but being the caring professional that he was, he was more concerned with our ailments than his own. A truly irreplaceable individual. He will be missed by all those that he has touched.

Our most sincere condolences to all the Kovacs family. Our thoughts and prayers are with you during what must be a extremely difficult period.

My deepest condolences on the loss of a wonderful human being. I cannot find the words to express the sadness and sense of loss that I feel, and I share your pain and grief.
Dr. Kovacs was always a very special person with unfailing kindness and understanding. He cared for my parents, my late husband and my daughters. I feel privileged to have known him and cared by him for 45years. Whenever I was hospitalized he would come and visit me daily at the Royal Vic or the Neuro. Three years ago I had my knees replaced, he apoligized that he won't be able to come and visit me.
Every time I left on a trip he would ask me to send him a card, which I did with pleasure.
May God give you strength to overcome your pain and sorrow. I feel like I have lost a member of my family.

For the many years that I, as well as other members of my family, were patients of Dr. Leslie Kovacs, I found him to be very professional, knowledgeable, caring and considerate, attentive to our needs, understanding, down-to-earth, realistic and with a great sense of humour. It is with the greatest regret that I have read of the passing of Dr Lesie Kovacs. To me he represented what many of us regard as the quintessance of medicine. A caring, attentive and informed physician. An ideal that we regrettable see less frequently today. He, and all he represented, will be sorely missed but his example will remain in many of us for years to come.
My condolences go out to Agnes and all the members of his family.

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Dr. Leslie Kovacs. Doctor Kovacs was my doctor for over twenty years and to my parents for an even longer time. He was very special to us not only because he was a wonderful doctor, but also because he was kind and compassionate. He always made himself available to us and returned our phone calls at night to reassure us and to give advice. I remember him often fitting me in at the last minute into his busy schedule in between patients when he sensed I was nervous about something. I could always count on him.

He took an interest in our personal lives and often laughed with my mother when she talked about her grand-children. Dr. Leslie was an extremely competent doctor, who was completely committed to his profession and in helping people. Our sincere condolences to the Kovacs family. We will truly miss this wonderful man and incredible doctor.

From my heart, my deepest condolences on the loss of a wonderful human being. I cannot find the words to express the sadness and sense of loss that I feel, and I share your pain and grief.

To me, Dr. Kovacs was always a very special person, with unfailing kindness, patience, warmth and understanding. He cared for my parents, my late husband, and a few of my friends, everyone of whom thought the world of him, and deservedly so.

I feel honoured and privileged to have known Dr. Kovacs and to have been cared for by him -- for 40 years! He was always there for me when I needed him. The obituary is a moving tribute to a superb doctor, diagnostician, sportsman and all-around "Renaissance Man." He was remarkable, and totally irreplaceable., and I will always cherish my memories of him.

May God grant you courage and strength during this time of sorrow and grief, and your memories bring you peace and consolation.

You are all in my thoughts and prayers, especially my special Kathy.

Dr. Leslie was an anacronism in today's materilistic world. He was the consummate professional:caring, compassionate, attentive and clinically astute.I too, will miss his humor, his reassurance and the time and patience he took to listen. In many ways he was a mentor I only hoped to emulate.May the lifetime of fond memories you retain, ease your loss.

Dear Dr. Kovacs and family,

I only saw Dr. Leslie in passing as he raced back and forth in his busy office on Cote des Neiges, while I spent many, many (MANY!) hours in the waiting room he shared with is incredible pediatrician wife, Dr. Agnes, on the other side of the office, with my 4 children, through the many years. As I felt my kids were actually being loved as well as cared for by the incredibly generous, special, memorable and unforgettable Dr. Agnes, I can only imagine how equally wonderful was Dr. Leslie.

As my own kids grew into teenagers and obviously too big for Dr. Agnes' precious little table, I reluctantly had to fend for myself to find "older kid doctors" and realize, all too unfortunately, that the medical world is far too deprived of the likes of the dedicated Kovacs'. As a frequent telephone caller to their calm and attentive daughter Kathy, I always felt it was a privilege to have my kids cared for by his beloved and one-in-a-kind wife.

I feel moved by this sad news, I feel huge sympathy for this wonderful family, but I feel some consolation to know that I was a small, teeny tiny part of their lives in that Dr. Agnes made me feel better about the world and about being the proud mother of 4 healthy children dozens and dozens and dozens of times through these years.

So special was Dr. Agnes that I was VERY surprised to read she enjoyed a 60-year marriage with her accomplished husband....surprised because I never would have thought she was old enough to have a 60 year marriage (!!!) so I think to myself, she must surely have married at age 4....just kidding but the sentiments I am trying to express are most sincere.

Dr. Agnes, if you read this, I want you to know that you are a permanent part of my soul. I hope you take some comfort in knowing how many people your spirit has touched through these years of holding newborns like they were the first and most special baby you ever saw in your life.

God bless you, dear Kovacs' and family; you are loved and remembered at this very sad time.

Les and I shared a lab for a few weeks in 1958 and were friends ever since while I was at the Vic. He was one of the best clinicians I ever met, and a real and sincere human being. He is irreplaceable. We both mourn his illness and untimely death.

I was a patient of Dr. Kovacs for 37 years at the Metabolic Day Center of the Royal Victoria Hospital. He followed me through joyous times as in the pregnancy of my twins and through many difficult times when the complications from my diabetes arose. He took an interest in my life, often asking about my twins and sharing my happiness in their successes. He spoke, with pride, of his children.

He always came to see me when I was admitted to hospital for reasons other than my diabetes. He was my mentor on many occasions.

On one of my last visits, Dr. Kovacs told me that I was one of his longest patients and asked me if I would be one of his patients who would pray for him. I will truly miss him.

My sincere condolences to Dr. Agnes Bimbi-Kovacs and to Dr. Kovacs' children and grand-children.
You are suffering a great loss.

Our deepest sympathies to the kovacs family. We have known Dr Kovacs for over 20 years, he was a great doctor to our entire family as well as a dear friend, we will never forget the amazing help he gave us when our father was ill for almost 10 years and in recent years with my mother-in-law. Dr. Kovacs was truly an exceptional person who cared about his patients as if they were part of his family, he took the time even when he was away from the office to speak to you if you needed, he was truly a great man. We will never forget our Dr. Kovacs may he rest in peace.
