BELOIT, Wis. - Leverett E. Lappin, 82, of Beloit, Wis., and a former longtime resident of Marengo, passed away Thursday, Oct. 16, 2008, at South Beloit Hospital.

He was born May 6, 1926, in Woodstock, to Leverett and Lillian (Fredrickson) Lappin. On Jan. 20, 1949, he married Maxine Yerke in Marengo. She preceded him in death in September 1998.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was employed for many years as a maintenance man at Arnold Engineering. He was a member of American Legion Post 192 in Marengo.

He was an avid golfer and enjoyed flying radio-controlled airplanes. He also enjoyed the outdoors. He was a loving father, grandfather and husband.

Survivors include his four sons, Larry (Patty) Lappin of Dixon, Dennis (Karen) Lappin of Poplar Grove, Richard (Carol) Lappin of Harmon and William of Atlanta; a daughter, Mary Lappin of Marengo; a sister, Pat Lappin of Lubbock, Texas; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Marilyn Kasten of Beloit, Wis.

A gathering of friends for a celebration of his life will be from 3 p.m. Monday, Oct. 20, until the service at 7 p.m. at American Legion Post Home 192, 315 Park Drive (corner of Park and Route 20). The Rev. Neal Miller will officiate. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21, at Marengo City Cemetery with full military honors to be accorded.
