Lewis Latto Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 25, 2011.
Lewis M. Latto, Jr., of Duluth, died suddenly at his home on Wednesday, August 24. He was 71.

Latto was a lifelong Duluth resident and civic supporter. He began a career in broadcasting at the age of 14 that lasted until his death. Beginning with WKLK in Cloquet, Latto was an on-air personality and newscaster for many area stations, including WEBC and WDSM. In 1958, he was named music director at WDSM when the station began to play Top 40 music. He bought his first radio station in 1964, a 1,000-watt AM station he renamed WAKX, and then launched one of the area's first FM stations in the 1970s, KPIR (later known as WAKX-FM). At one time, Latto had six Minnesota radio stations in his network. Latto served as president of the Minnesota Broadcasters Association, who inducted him into its Pavek Museum Broadcasting Hall of Fame in 2003. He also served as a director of the National Radio Broadcasters Association. At the time of his death, he continued to own and operate three radio stations on the Iron Range, WEVE-FM, KRBT-AM and KGPZ-FM.

Latto was a graduate of Denfeld High School (1958) and the University of Minnesota Duluth. In 1959 at age 19, while a student at UMD, Latto promoted and hosted the Winter Dance Party at the Duluth Armory, featuring performances by Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper. It was one of the last shows Holly played before he and others died in a plane crash. A young Bob Dylan attended the show, which he later cited as a major event in his musical development.

Latto was active in area politics as well, holding office and advising many candidates and elected officials. He was first elected to the Duluth City Council in 1969 at age 29, at that time the youngest member ever to be elected to the Council. He served multiple terms as an at-large city councilor in the 1970s, including a long stretch as council president. He managed former state senator Dick Palmer's campaign in 1970, when Palmer drew national attention after he was elected as the lone independent in an evenly-divided Minnesota legislature. Latto's politically-oriented radio talk show – for years "Open Mike" and later "Lew Latto Live" – engaged and sometimes tormented loyal callers for decades. He earned a reputation for meticulous preparation and presentation whenever he discussed a civil issue. Virtually every area elected official appeared on the show, including sitting governors, senators and representatives, who respected his political intelligence even when they differed with him.

He was preceded in death by his parents Lewis M. Latto, Sr. and Ethel Sophia (Nelson) Latto.

He is survived by his children Aaron (Beth) Latto of Cincinnati, OH and Caroline Latto of Duluth; two granddaughters Paige and Nina of Cincinnati, OH; sister Marilew (Bob) Barnidge of Duluth; nephews Tom (Mary) Barnidge of Apple Valley, David (Phyllis) of Rochester and Betsy (David) Podas of Los Angeles; and former spouse Susan Beasy Latto of Duluth.

Visitation will be held from 10 A.M. until the 11 A.M. funeral service on Monday, August 29, 2011 at First United Methodist Church (Coppertop) 230 East Skyline. A private family interment will be held in Oneota Cemetery. A full notice will appear in the Saturday and Sunday editions of the Duluth News Tribune.

I have been a long time listener. I appreciated the insight that Lew gave to all of his listeners. I truly enjoyed all of the callers, even though I didn't agree with some of them. Lew had that special way to make most people feel like they should call and express their opinions. If he didn't care about the subject, "it would be a short conversation". I am on the road every day. I would plan my travel schedule so I would be able to listen to Lew; to get educated.
I will truly miss his program. See you at "5:06" somewhere.

Hey Lew,
This is Ruby calling. I am so saddened by the reality that you are gone...but as they say, you shall not be forgotten! I guess I believed it when you often quipped you have been doing this radio gig for 100+ years (I forget the exact figure you would give) and thus assumed you would be around for another 100+....missed opportunity!
My regret is now that I shall never fulfill a fantasy of meeting you face-to-face to debate the issues of the day...I shall have to be content with the mystique of your radio personna.
Respectfully,
Ruby (alias) from Virginia, MN

Lew and I have been good friends since junior high school. We shared many memorable good times. Playing basketball for Lincoln Junior High Lew, Dick Toland and I would scare the other teams by just walking on to the gym floor. We were all over six feet
tall and the opposing players jaws would drop at the sight of the "skyscrapers" they would have to play.
I accompanied Lew on many road trips to Cloquet. We went to his D J job in a 1949 Ford. Lew liked to go fast.
The wheels on his car were out of balance and they would shimmy. The only way to get this to stop was to increase speed. I also went along with Lew to many of the dances he promoted.
After high school we lost contact for many years. Recently we were able to get together for lunch or dinner in Duluth as well as Ft. Lauderdale. My wife and I had a chance meeting with Lew at the Pickwick. We promised to get together. Lew followed it up with a call about a week ago and we made arrangements.
Why is it that in life one just waits too long?
My condolences go out to his family and friends. Lew was a true friend who will never be forgotten.

To the Family,Friends and Listeners;
My heartfelt condolences. I always wanted to be a "first time caller" by was reluctant.

So, there I was every morning in my kitchen, slicing my apples and bananas and pouring my o.j. for breakfast and talking back to Lew. I took in every word. I adored all the callers from Rosemarie to Don and Dano, from Eric and Tony, Ernie...all of you. even "Dry Dock Bob".

I thank Lew for his conservative voice in the Northland and hope the show can continue.

From one "Hot House Flower to the other, may we meet in the sweet
by-and- by.
Sincerely,
Marge, from Virginia

I am saddened and stunned to suddenly lose this long-time friend. Our views often concurred, and often differed, but our friendship was always warm and secure. Lew is one of Duluth's all time greats, and his premature loss is felt by many, both here and afar.
With my sincerest condolences and sympathies to the family,
Bob Goldish

Lew was a unique man with a unique voice. I send my sincere sympathy to his family. I knew Lew when we lived in the west end and attended elementary, jr high and high school together. It was a fun to talk with him at our class reunions. God's blessings to you, his family.

After many years of competing with Lew, I was privledged to work with him at WEBC. What an "easy sell" he became for a Sales Manager and Sales Team! I also got to know him as a "human being" beyond his personna, and what a wonderful man.

God Bless you Lew....and what a way to go!

Lew Latto was a friend of mine since high school. Even though I left Duluth in the 60'S for sunny Florida..we kept in touch. Since he moved to Ft.Lauderdale, we usually celebrated our birthdays together. I will miss those special times. My sincere condolences to Lew's family.

What a true professional Lew was. I only met him on one occasion but always admired his work. I grew up in duluth and spent many years in Radio myself. I met him while working in sales at the old WGGR, a beautiful music station in Duluth. He was so respected in the broadcasting industry.

I am so saddened by the passing of my radio buddy, Lew. Many years ago at Denfeld, Lew served as an inspiration to me to get into radio. Later in life, we became friends and would lunch together each time I came back from Texas for a visit. I have always had the greatest admiration for Lew, who accomplished much in our chosen field. My condolences to sister Marilew and his entire family. Lew will be missed by many friends and fans, and certainly by me.

In Septemer 2005, I had the pleasure of interviewing Lew in preparation for one of my annual MN Music Specials on KOWZ-100.9 FM. Though I am not a professional broadcaster, Lew was and he graciously engaged me on a variety of topics during our phone conversation. My take-aways from that interview was that he regarded Pat Cadigan of KDAL-fame as one of the best announcers that he had ever heard--a high compliment from someone with the credentials of Lew Latto in that industry. Lew was equally in admiration of Dr.Don Rose as probably the overall best air-talent to have worked in the Twin Ports. We both shared our thoughts about the music of the day, preferring the recording artists of the 50's and 60's. I found Lew to be delightful, unassuming, and a respectful human being. He could have easily turned-down my request for an interview, but he took the time to delight this amateur who valued radio and the MN Music scene from prior years. I will always recall his kindness and greatness in reflecting on his 57 years in MN Radio. He demonstrated the "Denfeld Spirit" along with his other many talents. Lew Latto has left us with a high standard and will be missed--as well as remembered.
