Lewis Parham Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 26, 2014.
Charlotte - Lewis Parham, 81, died Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2014. He was born in Wilson, N.C., November 5, 1932 to the late Lewis H. Parham and Mary Elizabeth Chambers. He was reared in Raleigh, N.C. and attended schools there, ending at Needham Broughton High School. He moved to Charlotte during his junior year in high school and was graduated from Central High School in 1950.

He attended Charlotte College for one year and transferred to UNC in Chapel Hill. He received a BS in Business in 1954 and his Juris Doctorate with honors from UNC law school in 1957. He was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha social fraternity.

Also in 1957, he was commissioned in the Army in the Judge Advocate General division, stationed at the Pentagon. While in Washington, he received an LLM in Tax at Georgetown University.

After three years in service, he started practicing Law in Charlotte with Hedrick and McKnight. He later began his own firm, Parham, Helms, and Harris, where he worked until he retired from active law practice. He was very active in the Homebuilders Association, serving as Legal Counsel. Subsequently, he was involved in Commercial Real Estate, development, and various other ventures.

Lew was a member of Myers Park Country Club, having served on the Board of Directors twice and as President. He was a former member of Quail Hollow Country Club.

He was one of four founders of New Dominion Bank, where he served as Chairman until poor health forced his retirement.

He married the former Elizabeth Holt (Bessie) in 1957. Lew is survived by his wife, Bessie; his son, Holt and wife Terri; his daughter, Liz Hannah and husband Randall. Also surviving are a nephew, Sam Lewis of Monroe and his wife Lynn; a great-nephew, John Lewis; and a great-niece, Maggie Lewis.

The family appreciates the care and love given by caregivers JoAnne Dunlap and Terrance Brown, and the many friends who came to visit Lew in his declining health; it meant a lot to him and the family.

Memorials may be made to The Humane Society of Charlotte, 2700 Toomey Ave., Charlotte, NC 28203.

A service will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 101 Colville Road, Charlotte at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, February 28, 2014. The family will receive visitors immediately following the service in Beard Hall at the church.

I was deeply saddened when I got the phone call earlier this week that Lew had passed away.

One of the nicest things about my employment as the receptionist at Parham, Helms & Kellam (1986-1990) was knowing "The Father".

Lew was simply an amazing man who spoke plainly so you always knew right where you stood with him - and if he was your friend, you had a friend for life.

And, oh! The stories he could tell!

I hope that the entire Parham family can find a little comfort during this saddest of times in the fact that so many people admired Lew. He was truly one of a kind and he will be greatly missed.

I wish to extend my condolences to the family of Lewis Parham for their heart-felt loss. As we mourn his passing from this world, we will miss him as we cherish the memories of the life he shared with us. To console each of us in this time of sorrow, we know he is moving to a grander place in the Kingdom of Heaven.

I will always remember him as “Lewie Parham,” one of my childhood buddies at Wiley School. When we were eight and nine, Lewie, Jimmy Blake (now deceased) , and myself would go to Lewie's home at the corner of Saint Mary's Street and West Jones Street in Raleigh after school to play cowboys before we headed home for the day. Then there were the cowboy movies every Friday and Saturday at the old Capital Theatre on West Martin Street – ten cents for the movie, a nickel for box of popcorn. A delightful life for young boys who dreamed of growing up one day to perhaps become one of those cowboys.

God Bless You and Comfort You in your time of Sorrow.

Lew has been a friend for thirty plus years. I have many fond memories of "the father" from playing golf or just sitting in the steam room at MPCC.
He will truly be missed by all of us that knew and loved him.

Heartfelt sympathy and prayers of comfort to the Parham family and friends. Lew was a mentor, advisor, and friend starting back in my early years at Synco. He was honest with a great sense of humor and caring heart. Thank you Lew for all you have done for me and my family.
