Lewis John Zolnik Sr.

Surrounded by his family, Mr. Lewis Zolnik, of Chamblee, GA, died peacefully on May 1, 2010 at the age of 88. Mr. Zolnik retired from the U.S. Forest Service after 44 years of dedicated service. He served in the U.S. Army for 40 years of active and reserve duty. His grade on retirement from the U.S. Army was CWO-3. He served with the 8th Armored Division in the European Theatre of Operation in WWII which carried him through seven countries. He received his training at Camp Polk, LA. He is survived by his wife, Isabelle M. Zolnik of Chamblee, daughter, Juliana Z. Kohl of Atlanta, sons, Lewis J. Zolnik, Jr. of Chamblee and Stanley W. Zolnik of Lithonia, daughter–in-law, Brenda C. Zolnik of Lithonia, sisters, Stella C. Hadeka of Granville, NY and Wanda P. Madrak of Clifton Park, NY, brother, Edmund Zolnik of Boulder CO., seven grandchildren, Jennifer Z. Hayes, Richard, Hannah, Susanna, Stephen, Ruthanna and Joanna Zolnik., great-grandchildren, Tyler and Grant Hayes. He is survived as well by several relatives in Warsaw, Lodz and Nur, Poland. Mr. Zolnik's parents came to America from Poland in the early 1920's. He is preceded in death by his first wife, Helen Sienicki Zolnik and his brothers, Walter Zolnik and Charles Zolnik. A memorial mass will be said for Mr. Zolnik at 11 am Wednesday, May 5th at Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Church, 1350 Hearst Drive NE, Atlanta, Georgia with burial to follow at Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Georgia at 2pm. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 pm at H.M. Patterson & Son, Oglethorpe Hill Chapel, 4550 Peachtree Road, NE, Atlanta, Georgia 30319.
