Liliane BOLLAND Obituary

Published by Montreal Gazette on Jun. 27, 2018.
BOLLAND, Liliane (née Wojczyk) 1935 - 2018 Liliane died peacefully sitting in her armchair at 10 in the morning on June 21, the first day of summer. As a child of the Holocaust in Belgium, she survived the trauma of war, moving to Paris in 1948. After leaving school, she worked for the French Foreign Service in France, Israel and the USA. A voracious reader, she did a BA in Anthropology at City College in New York (phi beta capa: keyholder award), then spent 2 years alongside "muralistas" in Mexico. She met and married Patrick Bolland while pursuing her Masters in Syracuse and after coming to Montreal in 1972, she found her calling teaching Humanities at Vanier College. She was a dynamic teacher, introducing students to neocolonialism, Latin America and helping them understand the impact of migration on their own family histories. Liliane's commitment to progressive ideas made her a solid and feisty union militant, both in the Vanier College Teachers' Association and Montreal Conseil Centrale of the CSN. Sadly, the childhood demons of war-trauma became more evident after Liliane retired in 2005. Without her students, she was less anchored and in 2015 moved to Fulford Residence, where she received excellent and caring attention from the staff until her last breath. According to her wishes, Liliane will be buried in France. A celebration of Liliane's life will be held in Montreal at a later date.

Lilliane was always interesting. I enjoyed our many brief talks on the fifth floor - between teaching our classes. Topics ranged from Holocaust to Marriage. May the family know no more sorrow.
