Lillian Harriet Cooke Cate Andrus, beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother, passed away on February 6th at home at Richland Place in Nashville, Tennessee .

Lillian was born in Fulton, Kentucky on March 11, 1920 to Lillian Fields and N.G. Cooke. After graduating from Fulton City High School, Lillian attended Stephens College for women for two years, followed by Vanderbilt University for two years from where she graduated in 1943 with a major in English Literature and where she received the honor of being selected as Lady of the Masque. At college she was an active member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. In February 1944, she married William Robert Cate, Jr., then in his 3rd year of Vanderbilt University Medical School. Several years after being widowed in 1960, she moved back to her original home town of Fulton, Kentucky and soon after married James Raymond Andrus, who had also attended Vanderbilt University. While living in Fulton, Kentucky, she served for several years as a board member of the City National Bank, an institution that had been co-founded by her grandfather and where her father had served as president and chairman of the board. Through the years, Lillian belonged to and participated in a number of organizations in addition to her college sorority, including the West End Methodist Church in Nashville, TN, First Christian Church in Fulton, KY, Nashville Women's Medical Auxiliary, Daughters of the American Revolution and the Centennial Club. Lillian placed a high value on extended family and friendships, had a strong love of poetry and a natural ability in fine arts and needlework. Lillian was instrumental in maintaining the reunion tradition started in her family in 1959. The tradition, which continues today, was founded on love and maintains ties between a family that is now spread all over the country.

Lillian is survived by her son and daughter, Dr. Ronald Cate and Mary Ann Cate; seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. She will be deeply missed.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, February 10th at 2 p.m. at Vine Street Christian Church, 4101 Harding Pike in Nashville and will be preceded by a visitation at the church beginning at 1 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made either to the First Christian Church, 108 Carr Street, Fulton, KY 42041 or The Lustgarten Foundation, 1111 Stewart Avenue, Bethpage, NY 11714, an organization dedicated to finding a cure for pancreatic cancer.
