Lillian Cooper-Wiggins Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Nov. 11 to Nov. 13, 2022.
Our mommy left this earth and went home to be with Jesus on October 26, 2022. Beloved daughter of Ben and Fannie Coleman Cooper, she grew up with her parents and six (6) siblings in a house on the river at 910 John Street Cincinnati, Ohio.

In 1950, she took a bus to Washington, DC seeking a government job. She passed the federal exam and worked as a file clerk with the Navy Dept. Soon after, she enlisted in the US Marine Corps Reserve. While trying to establish a foothold in Washington, she also worked in establishments along the U Street corridor namely the Hollywood, 652 and Mattie's Sportsman's Inn. In 1956, she entered the Miss Washington pageant as its first Black contestant.

In 1957, she went to work at the Ghanian embassy as an information officer traveling often to Africa with government officials and the press corps. In 1962, she decided to be a reporter and got a job with the Washington Afro American newspaper writing obituaries and delivering papers. By the end of the 1960's, she was covering politics including flying with Vice President Herbert Humphrey on Air Force 2 during the 1968 presidential campaign. She then began writing editorials and established her own column "From the Desk of Lil". By 1974, she was the Afro's Women's Editor. For her dedicated civic service, the Council of the District of Columbia proclaimed by resolution March 29, 1980 as Lillian Cooper Wiggins Day.

In 1981, she left the Afro for a position on Mayor Marion Barry's first DC Lottery Board. Two years later, she returned to journalism reporting with the Washington Informer. She was elected Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner for 4C03 and in 1991, Mayor Sharon Pratt Dixon nominated her to serve on DC's Taxicab Commission. She continued to write, appear on radio and had a show on local cable television. She also served for many years as Chair of the IACT board in Indian Acres and was past President of the Washington Chapter of Tots and Teens. Mommy was always very passionate about helping others.

She was preceded in death by her husband Adolphus "Face" Wiggins, adopted daughter Sarah (BeBe) Ikenna, and grandson Baby Wiggins. She is survived by her two children, son Michael Anthony Wiggins and daughter Karen Ann Wiggins, grandchildren Edythe, Nailah, Edem, Monique and Michaela, ten (10) great grandchildren and a host of other family and friends.

The family wishes to thank everyone for their prayers and expressions of love. Lillian Estelle Cooper-Wiggins

Mommy's legacy lives on in the hearts and minds of all the people she loved and inspired by her kindness, strength and quick wit. My life is better having known her and her family. She is certainly one of those angels looking out for us now. At this special time of year, thoughts and prayers to all who loved her.

My favorite memory of Grandma Lil comes up around this time EVERY year ~ Thanksgiving. My daughter, Grandma Lil's great-granddaughter Raina, was three at the time and Grandma had JUST sold her house and moved into her new house. Raina was given a set of crayons and was told to go play. We, the adults, thought that we would soon be given a picture drawn on a piece of paper. We were all met to hand-drawn illustrations on the mirrored wall!!! Grandma Lil told us not to punish Raina. I assumed that Grandma was going to wash the "wall art" off, but when we returned for our family gathering in December for Christmas it was still there!!! I'm going to miss her so much!

Love you Grandma,
Adia

My condolences to the Wiggins family. My apologies for the late message. I am just finding out about her passing. I had the pleasure of speaking to her on a few occasions. She was a very nice lady and when speaking to her you knew that she was a person of great intellect and I will never forget her.

Ma Wiggins was one of a kind. Her thoughtfulness was greatly appreciated during my transition from NY. I can still hear her voice as she told “ life lessons “. I can even still picture her as she pulled up on UVA campus in the infamous green caddie to visit Karen. I know she is greatly missed however treasure all the times you had with her. She’s in a greater place. Thank you for sharing this beautiful women with me. Love to you both. Barbara

Karen and Michael,
I deeply loved and admired Aunt Lil, and I will always remember her with love. I was so blessed to have spent quality time with her in her final years. She always shared such wisdom and I felt honored just to be in her presence. My heart aches for your loss, and want you both to know how much you all mean to me. You know how much love I have in my heart for Aunt Lil, she was like a bonus Mom to me. I’ll never forget the times we spent together over the years, Aunt Lil wouldn’t let me if I tried. She was one of the smartest and wisest women I know. She had a beautiful soul and she will be in my heart always.
My sincere condolences

Her Journey Just Begun

Don't think of Ms. Lillie as gone away-
her journey's just begun,
life holds so many facets-
this earth is only one. . .
Just think of her as resting
from the sorrows and the tears
in a place of warmth and comfort
where there are no days and years.
Think how she must be wishing
that we could know today
how nothing but our sadness
can really pass away.
And think of her as living
in the hearts of those she touched . . .
for nothing loved is ever lost-
and she was loved so much.

In Loving Memory

I remember Lillian Wiggins as a strong, proud black woman. She would always stress to Mike and I, the importance of education.

My most fondest memory was how she would protect KK from us( Mikes friends), trying to push up on her. I think back, and it tickles me how we´d be sitting in the kitchen on Crittenton Street, and KK, or Kim would walk in the kitchen, I´d be reckless eyeballing them, and she´d catch me and quickly intervene by saying " hey KK, get me that seasoning salt out the pantry" , and hit me with the you know I see you look.

Those were very special times to me, at how she showed an interest in what Mike and I getting into, hanging out, during those very dangerous times of the mid to late 80s!

She would always make sure we had something positive on our minds. The last time I saw her, we danced at her 85th birthday celebration, and she cut the rug.

I know that my memory writings my not be grammatically correct, and she would probably proof read it and make the necessary corrections for me, but I had to say something about this brilliant, woman! I will miss her immensely! May God give her peaceful rest. Love you ma!

I met Lillian Wiggins one day as I was walking down New Hampshire Ave. and she was sitting on the porch with her newborn baby Michael. I stopped to say how beautiful he was and from there she asked me if I could in fact babysit with Michael that turned into a full-time babysitting job and later babysitting for her adrable baby girl, Karen. This led me associating with Ms. Mattie, who was just a wonderful woman who had a diner downtown next to the Howard theater. I believe it was between the Howard theater and the pool hall. I started to help Mattie down at the diner and wound up meeting prince who was the door keeper of the highway theater who offered me many days of access to all the great stars and I do mean all the great stars. Those years nurtured my love of music that led to me having a wonderful career in music publishing and Songwriting. Lillian was a stern godmother who taught me discipline obedience and imagining a world greater than the poverty world that I was living in. I thank and praise her with helping to elevate my life goals and achievements. Love and blessings to the family, Micheal and Karen And the grandchildren. God bless you
