Joe Bill & Emily Sue,

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Miss Lil. I stopped to see her about three weeks ago and she was having a very good day. She introduced me to a couple of her friends, relating stories good and bad! Our thoughts and prayers are with you and the family.

Joe Bill, I was sorry to read of your Mother's death. My mother, Piggie Laphew always spoke so highly of your mother and enjoyed her company. I have not seen you in years, probably decades, but remember you well. Our mother died 7 years ago and I miss her each day but know that she is with our father and was so ready to leave this world. Please accept my heartfelt sympathy for you and your family. I am now Fran Alba but you might remember me better as Frances Ann Laphew.

Of all the teachers I had growing up, Mrs.
Buckberry was my favorite. She taught me at
Coalwood, 5th and 6th grades during WWII.
I believe she understood us children of
coalminers and taught us well. Pleasant
memories of her.

I was born and raised in the Middletown section of Coalwood, graduated from Big Creek in 1951 and Marshall University in 1955. Getting old I have few memories of my early school years. But, one of them is being taught by Mrs. Buckberry in the 6th grade at Coalwood. For some reason I especially remember her giving a spanking to me and 4 other guys for going out in the rain at lunchtime at Coalwood school(anyone without enough sense to not go out into the rain deserved a spanking, was her reason). At WV day several years ago, I remindered her of this. She was a wonderful person and a great teacher and I so enjoyed seeing her at WV day.
