Hi! Well to my surprize I don't even know how I found this post. Sorry I didn't hear about it at the time. However, I was in Pittsburgh taking care of my cousin's home while she was ill. I came home about the 1st of Dec. for Chirstmas and then she passed away on Jan 17th. Linda was a wonderful lady and we enjoyed each other's company and phone conversations. Alice Marks

While searching the Cumberland newspaper index yesterday for Kirby family members I found the articles below:

LETTERS TO SANTA CLAUS

Kitzmiller, Md., Dec. 10, 1931
Dear Santa Claus:
I am tiny girl seven years old. Please bring me a story book, wrist watch candy and nuts. Don't forget my wee-wee sister, Margie.
Your Friend, LOUISE KIRBY

Dear Santa Clause:
I am a little girl four and one-half years old. Please bring me a doll and bed. But please don't forget my sister Louise, who is seven years old.
The Good Girl, MARJORIE E. KIRBY
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Elsie Mary Kirby passed away in February 1931 and this was mom's first Christmas without her mother. How heartbreaking it must have been to lose your mother at such a young age. These sweet letters to Santa make me realize how much I will treasure the love and affection you gave to me all these 57 years. Love Always, Kelly

When we were younger, my brother and I never really liked visiting Grandma's apartment for the weekend. We didn't get along being in such close proximity to each other, and, worst of all, it was boring. She had maybe five television channels, none of them with anything interesting on. I remember instant oatmeal for breakfast, and she almost always had some sort of cookies in the kitchen, and when we went out, it was usually to a small convenience store where we would get drinks or snacks. Inside her apartment, my brother and I would amuse ourselves with little plastic animals or finger paints as we waited impatiently for Mom to pick us up. Even when escape was in sight, Grandma would hold on to us a little longer for kisses before we could leave.
And she loved to talk. When you picked up the phone when she called, you were getting into a long-term commitment. I never thought that she would stop being so talkative, and if it happened, I didn't think I would miss her chatter so much.
But I did. After her stroke, I just kept waiting for her to get her voice back. I waited for her to begin to talk without end. She didn't seem the same when she wasn't talking your ear off.
She's gone, but I won't forget her. I can't have beef stew without thinking about her. Her apartment was filled with owl figurines and pictures, and she had these few fancy forks hanging on the wall. I remember this uncomfortable brown blanket she had. I remember her smile, her chain smoking, and how she'd get lipstick on me and my brother when she kissed us good-bye.
I love you, Grandma.

I didn't know you terribly well, but when ever I saw you, you were always smiling. When ever there was a holiday and we got together you would always look at your grandchildren with great love. I can't say much but I know you were and still are a very loving person. I'm glad to have met you, may you find peace in your rest.

Mom and Dad divorced when I was 8, CK stayed with mom I went with Dad. After that contact with Mom was letters, telephone, a couple of visits when I was in the Navy and then brief vacation visits over the years. I never forgot what a good cook she was, her scalloped potatoes were to die for. Mom was everyone’s friend and she really liked to talk. All of her grand kids were very special to her and she devoted many years caregiving to several of them. Mom enjoyed traveling and was game to go just about anywhere and check it out. One day a few years back we were out sightseeing in our local mountains and I pulled off to the side of the road and asked her if she would like to go to the top of Mt. Jupiter, “sure” she replied. So I put the truck in four wheel drive and off we went up Mt. Jupiter. It took about 5 minutes to traverse 1.74 miles and climb the 1100 feet to the top of the mountain. When we stopped she exclaimed Oh Boy! You didn't say there was “no road and we were going to go straight up” but I really like the view now that I'm here! I posted some of my favorite pictures of Mom, her grand kids and her Favorite Son’s (and Mt. Jupiter). I’m glad Moms suffering is over, we will all miss her a lot.
