Linda Giles Carr, age 72, of Gretna died Saturday, January 16, 2021 in Charlottesville, VA due to complications from ovarian cancer. She was born November 18, 1948, the youngest child of the late Chesley Lee “Jack” Giles and Frances Murphy Giles. She and her four siblings actively worked on their parents’ tobacco farm from a young age, the start of an impressive work ethic that was to characterize Linda’s entire life. After graduating Gretna High School, Linda attended Campbell University in North Carolina, before starting a career as a history teacher for Pittsylvania County Schools that would span four decades. She was a member of Anderson Memorial United Methodist Church, where she was active with missionary work. Among her many talents, Linda was an accomplished vocalist, pianist, and guitarist. In her spare time, she enjoyed reading, genealogical research, and flower gardening.
She is survived by two daughters, Liana Carr of Greensboro, and Laura DuBose of Charlottesville; one brother, Vernon Lee Giles of Chatham; and three sisters, Ruby Gail Giles of Chatham, Patsy Giles Mason and husband Tommy of Gretna, and Billie Jean Dillard and husband Carroll of Hurt. She is additionally survived by several nieces and one nephew who always held an affectionate place for “Aunt Lulu” in their hearts.
Graveside services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 20, 2021 at Green Hill Cemetery in Altavista by the Rev. Jim Giles. A viewing for family will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 19, 2021 at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home in Gretna.

I am so sorry for your loss. All who loved her will remain in my thoughts and prayers. She was a classmate of mine from first grade through graduation. Linda's musical talent and ambition were impressive. Gone much too soon.

My deepest sympathy to Leanne and Lori.I have many fond memories of "Aunt Lulu". Some of my favorite are when she was college age and twenties. I remember the family getting together at Papa and Mama Giles and Aunt Lulu would play her guitar and sing. If I remember correctly some of the songs she wrote herself. I always thought she was beautiful( just like in the picture). When I got older I enjoyed many conversations with her about family and history. I am so glad she is suffering no more.

I fondly remember Mrs. Moody (as I remember her) as a special teacher. She would play her guitar for us and also read Charlotte 's Web to us.

Many my age saw Linda as a teacher. To me, she was only family. I didn’t get to see her like I used to, but every time we did run into each other it was as if no time had passed. It’s been almost two years since we’ve last seen each other, and I’m heartbroken that there’ll never be another in this lifetime. However, there are a host of Giles’, Newby’s, and family, friends, colleagues, and others who she has been reunited with, especially Uncle Jack and Aunt Frances.
In Christ my sister!
