Doris was born April 13,
1937 to William 'Fritz' and
Phyllis Stiegel in Moline,
Illinois. Doris married Fred
Forrest Herndon on July
12, 1959.She was barely 17
when she graduated Moline
Public High School and
at one time was invited to
become a member of the
famous Mensa society. She
declined the invitation as
pretentious. That was the
way she was. After high
school, she attended nursing
school at Moline Public
Hospital in Moline, IL and
remained there to work for
several years. She continued
her nursing career and
ultimately became a specialist
in geriatric nursing.
Doris was quite the tomboy,
playing in the sun and
swimming in the Mississippi
river much to her mothers'
chagrin. She loved the
outdoors, hiking, camping
and learning all she could
about plants, birds, and
animals. She and Fred even
went car camping for their
honeymoon. She taught
her children to love nature
and all its creatures, great
and small. She enjoyed
gardening, sewing and
many needle arts. In 1973,
Doris and Fred packed their
young children and all their
belongings and moved to
Colorado. She immediately
adopted the Rocky Mountains
as a new adventure,
and learned as much about
them and its animals as
she could. Doris is survived
by her husband Fred of 55
years, daughters Wendy
(Kris) Meredith of Arvada,
CO; Christine (Jesse)
Herndon of Golden, CO;
grandson Justin (Chelsea)
Meredith of Arvada, CO;
granddaughter Heather
(Dan) Cobler of Strasburg,
CO; her brother William
Stiegel of New York City, NY;
and 2 great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death
by her parents and her
older brother David Stiegel.
Donations can be made
