Walczak, Linda Marie (Johnson), 61, of Dorchester passed away at home on December 27th from cancer, in the arms of her husband of 42 years and their two children. Linda grew up and spent most of her life in Dorchester. She was a vibrant, passionate, and generous soul. The first in her family to attend college, she graduated summa cum laude from UMass Boston while engaged in protesting for farmworkers' rights and against the Vietnam War, and later earned a Master of Education degree. She taught in the Boston Public Schools for nearly 30 years and found her life's work in literacy. She taught hundreds of young children to read, and upon her retirement, volunteered with Project HOPE to share her talents with women in poverty. Teaching was more than a career, it was a creative outlet, and she designed experiences for her students around seasons, Boston historical events, and passions of her own. Linda loved creating a beautiful world around her, decorating her home, especially during Christmas, and sharing in the natural beauty of New England. She found peace and happiness by the sea on Cape Cod in its thrift stores and bicycle paths, and loved her late dogs, Jessie and Molly. She will be remembered for her sharp wit and goofy sense of humor, her intellect and curiosity, her passion for progressive politics, and her fiery personality. She will be deeply missed by her loving best friend and husband Bill, her son Matthew, daughter Elizabeth, mother Josephine Johnson, and siblings William Johnson, Mary Jean Fielding, and Joanne Johnson. She leaves a cherished extended family, treasured friends from decades of teaching, and countless others whose lives she touched. Visitation will be held on Friday, January 1 from 2 to 6 p.m. at the Murphy Funeral Home at 1020 Dorchester Ave., DORCHESTER. A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, January 2 at 11 a.m. at Dorchester's Blessed Mother Teresa Parish, 800 Columbia Road. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Linda M. Walczak Children's Literacy Fund at the Boston Foundation, 75 Arlington Street, Boston, MA 02116 or www.tbf.org/WalczakFund.

Linda was a gift to all those who knew her and she leaves behind the legacy of a great woman. I had the pleasure of working with Linda in the Literacy Dept. She made our world a better place through her smiles, charm, wit, optimism. Most importantly she gave thousands of children hope and dreams for a brighter future with her talents as dedicated teacher. I will light a candle for her and pray that her spirit continues to glow in the hearts of the many people in whose lives she so lovingly touched.

Bill, you are one of the amazing people I've ever known, and you can't separate that from the long love and life you had with Linda. When I saw you together, I was always amazed at how much passion and excitement and love you always had for each other -- true soul mates. I have often thought about how you met and how you came to love Dorchester as you built your life with Linda. I'll always remember her great laughter at the player piano, sitting in your kitchen, or at various events around town. I always loved her passion for teaching too and her passionate belief that anyone with a good heart can connect with anyone. She was proof of that! And what great jobs you both did raising your kids! I know that as your feel the pain of this great loss you will always feel Linda's spirit. That spirit extends so far, farther than we can ever know. Peace, Bill.

My sister found and created a life of trust, love, and happiness with her husband Bill Walczak.

Her children were a great source of satisfaction and pride with their good accomplishments.

Many years ago, our mother Josephine reports her visit with Linda's 3rd grade teacher in Milton. The teacher said to mother, "What do I tell a parent with a child who does everything perfectly?"

Dear Linda,
It was such a pleasure to know you and to work with you.
You represent the very best of the Boston Public Schools. You have left a legacy of readers who learned to read at the hands of a caring and loving teacher.
As a coach you were a true mentor and knowledgeable colleague always ready to pitch and work side by side.
I will remember your kindness, generosity and of course your sense of style.
Love,
Ann
