HIGH POINT — Linzy Price "L.P." Megginson Jr., affectionately known as "Pampaw" to his family, passed away peacefully at his home in High Point surrounded by family on Saturday, January 8, 2011. He was 86 years old.

L.P. was born on December 12, 1924 in Shelby, the son of the late L.P. Megginson Senior and the late Margaret Louise Bean Megginson.

He graduated from Shelby High School in 1943. Soon thereafter he enlisted in the Army and was selected to join the Army Air Corps Cadet program. He served for two years until honorably discharged in 1945.

L.P. then went on to earn his B.S. at Wake Forest College (now University). Before graduating in 1950 he taught math and science at his former high school in Shelby for one semester.

On June 9, of that same year, L.P. married Mary Grace Queen of Casar, a newspaper reporter with the Shelby Daily Star. He was informed while on his honeymoon of his acceptance into the first dental class of the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry. Four years later, L.P. was awarded his Doctorate of Dental Surgery degree. Although he briefly worked in the towns of Burnsville and Statesville, L.P. established his permanent practice in High Point in January 1955 where he raised a family and continued his zeal for dentistry over the next 55 years.

Always a dedicated contributor to his field, L.P. was a member of the North Carolina Dental Society and the American Dental Association, as well as a former president of the Third District Dental Society. During his college days, L.P. belonged to the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity at Wake Forest College and the Xi Psi Phi dental fraternity at UNC-Chapel Hill. Furthermore, he played an instrumental role in the establishment of the dental hygiene program at Guilford Technical Institute (now Guilford Technical Community College) in the 1960s.

Dr. Megginson was a member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church. Dr. Megginson was preceded in death by his beloved brother, Billy McLeod Megginson. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary Grace Megginson of High Point, and his five children and ten grandchildren. His children include Margaret Fontana of Bluefield, WV; Mary Lin Brewer of Dunedin, FL; Michael Megginson of Boyds, MD; Susan Latapie of New York City; and Penny Beaver of High Point. Dear Mrs. Megginson and family, Until I moved to Madison a few years ago, Dr. Megginson was the only dentist I ever saw outside of the military. All of the family has been to your office at one time or another. You were all always very gracious and kind. Just this week, I was talking to my current dentist about Dr. Megginson, and I assumed that he was still in practice, as I could not imagine him not. I grieve with you for your loss, as I'm sure do countless others. My prayers and thoughts are with you.

My brother Don and I must have been among Dr. Megginson's first child patients in mid-1950s. The photo of him brings back good memories. After a first visit, hearing my Mother Thelma say "You're going to see Dr. Megginson" had an OK ring to it. Not a dread-the-dentist thing. He was truly a warm, caring professional. He related easily to us children. We knew he cared a lot. Family -- may God continue to bless you all.

Dear Mary Grace and kids...I had the upmost love and respect for your husband and father. He was my employer and friend for many years and always did whatever he could to promote dentistry and the profession of dental hygiene. He was a joy to work for, as I always heard him treat everyone with respect and kindness. He will be missed, and I feel honored to have known him and worked with him. My thoughts and prayers are with you in dealing with your loss...

Dear Mrs. Megginson, Penny and family,
I don't know were to start, but my family is heart broken as I know each of you are at this difficult time. Our prayers are with each of you. I feel like a part of my own family is missing, because for the last 32 years Mr. & Mrs.Dr. Megginson and Penny have taken care of my teeth, as well some of my family. I know Dr. Megginson was my dentist, but he was also a friend who always went that extra mile to take care of his patients. He will always hold a dear place in my heart, as well my families. I don't have enough paper to say what he truly meant to my family. Our pray is that God with comfort each of you, and I know that he has a wonderful dentist with him today, but also a wonderful person. If there is anything I or my family can do for your family please just let me know.
God Bless You Always

Dr. Megginson has been dentist to Lacy and myself for so many years. He was always ready to assist us as we needed his expertise.

We will miss him as I'm sure so many others in this community will as well.

May God surround you with his grace and mercy in the days ahead.
