Lionel Gatien Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 14, 2016.
GATIEN Dr. Lionel J. Gatien, 76, beloved husband, father, physician, mentor and friend, passed away surrounded by those he loved and lived for, on Sunday, February 7, 2016 after a prolonged illness. Lionel dedicated his life to his family, the friends and colleagues he considered family, and to his patients. After graduating as valedictorian of his medical school class in 1965, Dr. Gatien joined the US Army and became the Chief Medical Officer at the Armed Forces Entrance & Exam Station in Jacksonville, Florida. He achieved the rank of Major before earning an Honorable Discharge in 1969. Dr. Gatien then went into private practice, where he was dedicated to serving his patients for over 46 years, 43 of which were in Jacksonville. During this time, he was a founding member of the Geriatric Section of the American College of Osteopathic Internists, and was the first Doctor of Osteopathy to obtain active member status at Baptist Medical Center, Memorial Medical Center, Clay Memorial Hospital, and Orange Park Hospital. He was a founding member of Jacksonville Medical Center, now Specialty Hospital, where he later served as a Chief of Staff and was appointed to the Board of Trustees. Dr. Gatien also became the first Doctor of Osteopathy to be the Chairman of Internal Medicine at Memorial Hospital. At the time of his death, Dr. Gatien was the Chief of Staff at Kindred Hospital in Northeast Florida, a member of the Board of Directors at Orange Accountable Care ACO, and Medical Director & Clinical Research Investigator at the Fleming Island branch of the Jacksonville Center for Clinical Research. As an avid hunter and fisherman, Lionel said he hopes to see you all in the happy hunting ground hereafter. Dr. Lionel Gatien leaves behind a loving wife, Kathleen Gatien; children: Andre Gatien (Charlotte), Konrad Gatien (Jen), Daniel Brown (Donna), Kathy Ehresmann (Ken), and Tim Brown (Francesca); grandchildren: Isabelle, Elana, and Merannen Gatien; Luke and Lauren Gatien; Ryan, Noah, and Joanna Brown; and Jake, Sadie, and Bruce Ehresmann; siblings Gary Gatien (Kathleen), and Jean Smith. Lionel was preceded in death by his parents Lionel A. Gatien and Dorothy (Marsack) Gatien, and his sister Ann Marie Hicks. Lionel was dearly loved and will be greatly missed. The family would also like to express their gratitude to Haven Hospice of Orange Park for their caring and compassion during this difficult time. A memorial service will be held on Monday, February 15 at 4:00 at the Baha'i Community Center of Jacksonville, 5034 Greenland Rd, Jacksonville, FL 32258. Military honors will be given at the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his name to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Please sign the family's online guestbook at www.broadusraines.com. He was a good friend and colleague for many years in Des Moines, and thereafter. Sadly living kept getting in the way but he was never forgotten. I am sure he would say the same for me. Being a good physician was in his blood

I will forever miss my Uncle Lionel; he was old; but kind, funny and outgoing. He would bring us gifts for Christmas, Easter and other occasions including my birthday. Loved his laugh. RIP my friend

Lee was a very good friend in school. He was very bright and always cheerful. He had more than enough obstacles which he did overcome with style and grace. He was unstoppable, hence his handwriting. I saw him last at our fiftieth reunion and we spoke of a Florida reunion in the future. If we have one, he will be with us in spirit.

My husband and I were very proud to be able to know Dr. G. He profoundly impacted my husbands life in such a positive way that I don't think we could ever put it into words exactly. A man with the biggest heart and the warmest smile and one of the kindest souls to ever walk this earth. The world is a lesser place without him with us. Our condolences to the Gatien family. We love you!!!

I am deeply saddened of the passing of Dr. Gatien, as another physician I admired him for his compassion, strength, leadership and kindness not only to his patients but also to me and his colleagues. He had helped me in my career in so many ways I could never repay him and he would never expect me too.I was once ill myself and if it had not been for him my practice would not have survived.I knew I could always trust him to help me if I needed him.I will certainly miss him but know he is in a better place with no further pain, we have truly lost a bright light and hero rest in peace my friend and thank-you

I was invited to his home in Green cove and it was a barbecue . I was the guest of Dr. Soon Ahn. As a nurse at Brooks, I came to know Dr. Gatien as a physician, at his home he was just one of us, so down to earth happy. God speed Dr. And I know you are at peace with your God.

When we first came to this town from Md. over 15 yrs ago, I was afraid we would not find a physician or practice that we felt secure with until I happened upon Dr. Gatien & Assoc.
He truly embodied the definition of physician. Our family was blessed to have him for ten years. He can rest well with God in glory now, for surely he has lived as a servant to man.
Our family can only imagine the loss to his loved ones.

Sui Generis
is the most excellent way to describe this great man of medicine.

'A good name is better than precious ointment, and the day of death than the day of birth''

Ecclesiastes 7:1-4

Dr. Gatien was definitely a role model for his fellow physicians.
It's so wonderful how different people express how they loved and appreciated him. He was truly Jesus in action! Truly a kindred spirit!
In his position , he earned respect, yet he gave it to all he encountered.

The best way to honor his memory is to take explicit care of your God-given body.

Dear Dr. Gatien,
Many, many people miss you very much.
You touched many lives in more ways than as a physician. You were a friend, you were generous with your time and your hugs. Your banter was always fun and helped relieve the stress of a visit to the doctor. You were forthright while being kind when the news was badlike when you sent my mother straight to the hospital and probably saving her life.
You loved your horses and a specific carriageand chatted about how much you enjoyed riding.
Thank you for being there for my parents and for me. Thank you for how you respected your patients and actually loving them.
Thank you.
Heartfelt condolences to your family.

Dr. Gatien was not only my primary physician, he was my friend for over 30 years.

I always felt warm and comfortable with him. And will always appreciate the genuine love respect and joy he gave me and my care providers.

Dr. Gatien was our Lord's advocate of mercy here on earth. He has returned to his maker.

He was a great man who will be sorely missed. He lived a life worthy of grand laurels and endless acknowledgements.

Dr. Gatien was 'sui generus':one of a kind.

Dr. Gatien was my doctor for more than 10 years. I have never had anyone show such interest and concern whatever you were there for. He was so passionate with his patients and didn't make you feel that he had to hurry to his next one. We use to share stories about our vacations and also many jokes. He will be irreplaceable!
