Lisa Pickhardt Mann, 61, passed away peacefully at home early in the morning of October 28, 2017, surrounded by her family after a long battle with cancer.
She was the daughter of the late Bernice Simmons of Gulfport, MS, and Robert Pickhardt of Los Gatos, CA, and was predeceased by her sister Kelly Simmons, also of Gulfport.
She is survived by her husband of 35 years, Daniel Mann, her beloved sons, Alex and Nicholas, and her sweet dog Shepherd.
Lisa graduated from Loyola University in New Orleans and subsequently met her husband Daniel while working in the hospitality industry. Their careers evolved taking them to many different cities where they gathered close and lifelong friends.
In Charlottesville, Lisa worked as the longtime Associate Head of School for Development at St. Anne’s-Belfield School, and most recently served as Director of Development at James Madison’s Montpelier. She was deeply dedicated to Montpelier and her valued colleagues there.
A devoted mother, Lisa’s years in Charlottesville were filled with activities surrounding her boys’ lives. She held virtually every volunteer position at St. Anne’s-Belfield from auction worker to field trip chaperone to room mother. Outside the boys’ school, she served on the Women’s Committee and Martha’s Market at Martha Jefferson Hospital, and as a volunteer for CASA. Lisa was also an avid tennis player, a gardener, and a beach-lover.
Above all, Lisa will be remembered for being a loving and devoted wife, mother, and friend to so many. She was unfailingly positive, selfless, and kind. She focused her energy on others and made the most of each day.
The family would like to thank the wonderful staff of the University of Virginia Medical Center for the loving care Lisa received there. Special thanks to Dr. Charles Landon, Dr. Tim Showalter, and Jana Briedis-Ruiz, who gave Lisa and her family so much love and support.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Lisa’s name to The Montpelier Foundation, 11350 Constitution Highway, Montpelier Station, VA 22957.
Service will be at Christ Episcopal Church, 120 High Street West, Charlottesville, VA at 3:00pm Monday, November 6, 2017.

Lisa with her beautiful smile has become my beacon of light, guiding me as I move forward in life. Her values, so clean and pure, that I can only hope to emulate them. I will always hear her voice,in reminding me to look for the good in people, have no judgement and be generous to others. There is no question, that Lisa was much more than just better half of our relationship. In a certain way she was the rock and glue of the family keeping all together. For Lisa's tireless devotion and never ending love the boys and I remain eternally grateful.

Lisa always had a shining smile and warmth that was infectious when she walked into a room. Lisa you had grace, style, compassion, and a love of family that was shown through your boys.....My prayer is that your strength will live through them going forward, because you will be missed dearly.....you are an inspiration of strength and love to us all.

Lisa will always remain my idol. I hope to channel a fraction of her energy, optimism, grace, and kindness in my own life. I will ask myself "what would Lisa do?" when I meet with challenges in my life. I have never seen anyone the most difficult challenge that she did with such bravery. I am devastated for the hole she will leave in everyone's life - most especially Daniel, Nick, and Alex's. While I will miss her every day of my life, I will try to turn it around (as Lisa would have done) by remembering something wonderful about her or even a funny moment we shared. I send my wishes to Daniel, Nick & Alex for strength and courage in this difficult time. You had the world's best wife and mom, and we were all blessed to have known this extraordinary woman.

I knew Lisa for the last three years through her work at Montpelier. She was smart, helpful, organized and perfectly suited to her important position there. She became a hero to me as I watched her continue to be committed to Montpelier as she battled her illness. She is a role model in so many ways and I will remember her fondly.

Dear Daniel, Alex and Nicholas,
I was so terribly sorry to hear about Lisa. I wasn't aware that she was battling cancer and shocked to hear that she has passed away. I know I don't have to tell you what a wonderful person she was. It was always a pleasure to work with her on STAB parent and alumni projects. I feel fortunate to have known her. You are all in my thoughts and prayers during this challenging time.

Lisa was always impeccably dressed and had an amazing sense of style. She carried herself with such grace. The last time I worked with her there was a mishap with an event. She pitched in immediately to make it flawless. After the event she thanked me for my assistance. I gave her a quick hug and expressed it was my pleasure. I am in disbelief that was the last time I would see her. I have much to reflect on and learn from Lisa's life. My thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends.

Though I have been blessed to have known Lisa for nearly 20 years, it was her two year battle with cancer that left me most in awe of her. She was strong, brave, positive, and an inspiration to all who knew her. What a hole her departure has left in this community, and in my heart.

I had the great honor of working with Lisa at Montpelier. She was a remarkable professional whose exacting standards never felt heavy handed. She was unfailingly kind, warm and empathetic. I must add that Lisa always had a treat in her pocket for my little dog Bug who "works" at Montpelier and adored her. And not just for the treats.

Lisa was such a kind, happy, selfless, dedicated, talented, and brave person.
She was more than a colleague. Lisa was a mentor, a force for good, a shoulder to cry on, and a dear friend. Saying she was an inspiration is an understatement. She lived her life with compassion, empathy, courage, and grace. Her presence, input, and efforts made the world a better place.
I can only hope to try and follow in her footsteps as best I can.

Lisa was the most kind and gentle friend. On the afternoon of her death I was reading a book that quoted a poem written by Raymond Carver while he, himself, was dying of cancer. The poem "Late Fragment" reads:
"And did you get what you wanted from this life, even so?
I did.
And what did you want?
To call myself beloved, to feel myself
beloved on the earth."
Lisa, you were beloved on this earth and remain beloved in our hearts always.
Love to Daniel and the boys, Laura and Bart Weis

Ron and I are so very sad to hear of Lisa's passing. She was such a delightful, dignified, brave, accomplished lady. I know she was surrounded by a very devoted, loving family and am so sorry that you lost her at such a young age. I can't imagine how much you will miss her. Please let us know of the funeral arrangements. We hope you will find comfort in God's gift of peace and know that Lisa is in his loving arms now and forever. Much love, Uncle Ron and Aunt Bea
