Lisa McMillen Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 16, 2015.
Lisa Anne McMillen, 32, of Arlington, Virginia died peacefully in her sleep at 3:00 A.M., Friday, May 15, 2015 in her home surrounded by her family. Lisa fought a courageous battle against Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also commonly known as Lou Gehrig's Disease.

Born May 13, 1983, Lisa was the wife of Sean P. Galvin and daughter of Angela McMillen Ayres of Arlington, Virginia and John T. McMillen of Medina, Ohio.
Lisa graduated from Our Lady of the Elms High School in Akron, Ohio 2001. In 2005 she graduated from the College of Wooster where she majored in Business Economics and Political Science and was a member of the Delta Theta Psi sorority. She earned a Master's Degree from the John Glenn School of Public Affairs - The Ohio State University.

Lisa retired from the U.S. Government Accountability Office in Washington D.C. in April, 2015 after a seven year career as a senior defense analyst which brought her around the world to the Middle East and Europe. She was deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan four times for extended periods in the service of her country.

Lisa was a wonderful cook who enjoyed volunteering with Yellow Ribbon Fund, reading and raising awareness for ALS. Prior to the onset of ALS, Lisa was an avid runner and played kickball.

In addition to her husband and parents, Lisa is survived by her twin sister, Kathryn (Dan Hlavin) her brothers, Steven and Scott, her step-parents, Whit Ayres and Linda McMillen, mother-in-law, Patricia Galvin (Frank), and brothers-in-law Brian (Erika) and Kyle (Pattie Grant) and nephews Jack and Henry.

A Celebration of Lisa's life will be held on Saturday, June 20, 2015 at the Fort Myer Officers' Club, 214 Jackson Ave, Fort Myer, VA. Since this is a military base, guests must be registered to attend. Condolences will begin at 2:00 P.M. and the service will begin at 3:00 P.M. with a reception afterwards.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to one of the following organizations: ALS Association,
(be sure to mark it for research) or the ALS Virginia Chapter, which donated technology and medical equipment enabling Lisa to have a better quality of life.

Murphy Funeral Home, Arlington, is handling the arrangements.

Lisa was a true joy to be around. Her intelligent, sharp wit and humor always made me laugh. I am very thankful that I was able to share a part of her life and I will fondly remember all the stories she shared with me. Her strength and fortitude were an inspiration, as was her service to our country. She was blessed to have such a wonderful family and support structure who loved and cared for her deeply. Bob and I will keep you and your family in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

I honor both Lisa and her family ,especially Kat. Their love and attention made Lisa know how very loved and special she was. Never was there a woman less deserving of her fate, and never was there a family more willing to see her through it. Rest sweetly, dear Lisa.

Dear Angie, Scott, Kat, Steven, John, and Sean,
We were all so sad and sorry to hear about Lisa's passing. Lisa was our babysitter over the summer months, and undoubtedly she was our best sitter. She was kind, loving, caring, responsible, fun yet firm; all great qualities that any parent would love to have/find in a sitter, especially for 3 rambunctious boys. She was dedicated and always had a smile on her face. Lisa was great with Kyle, Colin, and Sean, and they loved and respected her in return. They looked forward to seeing her pull up in her jeep every day, because they knew that they were in for lots of fun and laughter when Lisa was around. She made quite a positive impression on them. We will always be grateful to Lisa and cherish our memories with her. Please know that we will never forget her and what she meant to our family; and we will be thinking of you all over the coming days and will continue to pray for you all during this difficult time.
With deepest sympathy,
Mark, Susan, Kyle, Colin, and Sean Pangburn

Lisa was the bravest person I've ever known. She inspired me every time we interacted. Her loss will be felt deeply by many, including me, but she passes having made so many of our lives better for knowing her.
