Lloyd Johnson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Mar. 11 to Mar. 13, 2006.
Lloyd Karl Johnson, 97, of Duluth, passed away peacefully at his Florida Keys home on Thursday, March 9, 2006. Lloyd was born on April 16, 1908, in Grand Marais, Minn., to Anna and Charles Johnson. Lloyd was valedictorian of his 1925 class at Cook County High School. He completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Minnesota in six years, receiving his LL.B. in 1931. Lloyd returned to Grand Marais and served as Cook County Attorney and started a real estate business with his uncle, A. Van Johnson. He spent a brief time in the Twin Cities, then came to Duluth in 1935, when he and classmate Ray Bruess opened an office on Michigan Street in downtown Duluth. During the 1930s and 40s, Johnson and Bruess acquired hundreds of thousands of acres of land in Northeastern Minnesota, cleared the titles, and sold the land to the U.S. Forest Service, helping to create what is now the Superior National Forest and the Boundary Water Canoe Area. Lloyd made several trips to Washington, D.C. to help persuade congress to appropriate the money to buy the land. In 1946, Lloyd and Duluth businessman Donald C. MacDonald started the company that became Superwood, which had five hardboard plants when they sold the company to Georgia Pacific in 1986. Lloyd and local contractor Bill Smith built the Mount Royal Shopping Center in 1958, adding to it over the years. Lloyd was a member of the American and Minnesota Bar Associations for more than 70 years. He belonged to the Kitchi Gammi Club and Northland Country Club. Lloyd was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Marion, in 1975; and his second wife, Dorothy, in 2000. He is survived by his sons, Tom of San Francisco, and Don of Duluth; his step-children Harold Knutson, Oakland, Calif.; Arlita Parsons, Duluth; Theodore Knutson, Duluth; Reena Dahl, Grand Rapids, Minn.; Dorothy Johnson, Duluth; Mary Collier, Moose Lake, Minn.; and David Knutson, Fairbanks, Alaska; and his close friend and business associate, Darryl Coons, Duluth. A Brief service and interment will be at 2:30 p.m. Thursday afternoon, March 16 at the Maple Hill Church and cemetery near Grand Marais, Minn. Lloyd Karl Johnson,

Who never met a lake, forest, or falls he did not like.

Business wise, people wise, and just plain wise -- who by his collecting saved much more than one of these grand scenes for all to enjoy for ever.

We thank you, Lloyd.

I was so sad to hear that Lloyd passed away. He was such a wonderful person, so full of knowledge and humor. My mother, Eileen, cared for both Dorothy and Lloyd. Lloyd, always the gracious host, threw wonderful parties that our entire family would attend. I sang Karokee songs on more than one ocassion!

I was blessed to know Lloyd and will miss him. Good buy you goooooood-loooooooking man, till we meet again!

With much love,

Renee' Scnmidt-Birman

At home on London Road or in the Florida Keys, LLoyd was a great host with many stories to tell. He loved my Dad, Bernal for his artistic abilities and my Mom, Wilvera for the cookies she baked. LLoyd would come over to our house on Big Pine to kill time, sample Mom's cookies and talk to Dad while Dorothy "shopped" at the flea market. We will miss his kindness, generosity and wisdom.

Lloyd was married to my grandfather's sister, Marion Bennett, for many years, and I have many memories of wonderful dinners in their home. In later years, as he was the last of his generation in my family, he told great stories of his life which I recorded as part of a family history I've been working on. What an amazing life, and a wonder that he survived, given his story (perhaps apocryphal) that he drove an old car from Grand Marais to Duluth in the 1930s--without brakes!

Grandpa, we loved you. Our memories with you and Grandma are infinite and dear and precious; you shaped our lives in so many ways. Thank you for loving Mom and Grandma as you did.

Gone the years of sunny mornings in Key West, with your job picking oranges and making the juice (and cooking wild rice and egg scramble), and rainy mornings in Duluth, with your job getting birch logs and making the fire (and cooking wild rice and egg scramble), but we learned much from your example: Always have a fireplace; never let your wife know that you can cook; oranges grow on trees and so does money if you buy the right real estate; good deeds aren't something you do, they're what's kept in the vault at the office; and always have an office, if only to get some sleep.

We visited Lloyd several times at his FL home. He was always gracious and friendly, and made you feel welcome. My father (Bernal deceased) and mother Vera considered him a good friend. Mom will miss the Christmas flowers that Lloyd would send her, I will miss his Christmas card. We feel diminished by the loss of this gentle kind man

I purchased the former Johnson resort on Gunflint Lake and had property ajoining Lloyd's on the west end of the lake. He was a good neighbor and a source of goodness for the entire of Cook county. He will be missed.
