Lloyd Shanks Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 14, 2025.
Lloyd Shanks passed away on November 12, 2025, at his residence in North Augusta after a full life of 97 years.

Lloyd was born outside the small town of Marble Hill, Missouri, "up in the holler", as they say, into a home with no electricity or running water. He was raised there with four sisters and three brothers, the son of a farmer and carpenter, where farm life taught him early on to make almost anything out of almost nothing. He grew up helping out on the farm, hunting and fishing in the Missouri hills, and still found time to play on the Lutesville High School basketball team.

Once he graduated from high school, Lloyd enlisted in the Air Force and served 6 years during the Korean Conflict. He was stationed in Korea, but because he was not actually on the front lines, he said he never felt like he deserved any special benefits from the government and always downplayed his service.

While in the service, he was also stationed just outside of Savannah, Georgia. There he met the love of his life, Shirley Weeks. They were married 65 years before Shirley passed away in 2017.

After the Air Force, Lloyd, or just "Shanks" as most people called him, went to electronics school, landed a job with AM International, and was transferred to the Augusta, Georgia office. So in 1956, with three kids in tow and one more on the way, Lloyd and Shirley moved to North Augusta where he lived for the rest of his life. Lloyd worked for well over 30 years with AM, gaining respect and admiration from all his customers and co-workers. His work ethic, and his eagerness to help anyone either at work or in his neighborhood with any problem they may have, made him a beloved friend to all who knew him.

He was always tinkering with something, building things, growing vegetable gardens, but he was never happier than when he was fishing or simply messing around in boats.

As a devoted father, he worked long and hard and sacrificed many things he and Shirley could have had to provide a good life for his children.

He was predeceased by his wife Shirley, and his eldest daughter Diane. He is survived by two sisters, Bess Banks and Lou Mazzarella and a brother, Frank Shanks, three of his children: Randy Moore, Nancy Learnard, and Max Shanks (Jeannie), three grandchildren: Rhonda Herringdine, Kimberly Paradise (Michael), Meredith Fulton (Brent), and five great grandchildren: Cameron Paradise (Haleigh), Brandon Paradise, Austin Paradise, and Bryce Fulton.

The family would like to thank Laura Whisnant from Gentiva Hospice for her kindness and support for Lloyd and the family. And, thanks to the folks at Sunrise Grill in North Augusta, and The Triangle Restaurant in Johnston, Lloyd's two favorite restaurants, for always having smiles and hugs for Lloyd every time he came in.

Services are to be private.

Considering the excellent care provided to Lloyd, the family has asked that memorials in his memory be made to Gentiva Hospice. (www.gentivahsp.com)

He was always making things. He loved working on that lath.
Marvelous pieces he has created in wood on that thing.
I miss you brother. I love you.
