Logan Schoenhardt Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 13, 2017.
Logan Schoenhardt was a cherished son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin, friend, Patriot Super Fan and Jedi Knight. He died peacefully in his sleep on Monday, February 13, 2017. Logan was courageous and strong as he faced his fight with cancer from the age of three. Everyone who knew him appreciated his intelligence, depth of understanding, quick-witted humor, and his ability to persevere in the face of difficult circumstances. Logan was a life-long Star Wars fan, and his life experience formed him into a true Jedi Knight. Logan was an inspiration to many people for his ability to endure hardship and yet still have a positive attitude and live his life to the fullest measure. Logan loved many things. He was a true naturalist, reading endless books about dinosaurs, mammals, geology and nature, and visiting The Roaring Brook Nature Center, the Mystic Aquarium and the Connecticut Science Center as often as he could. He enjoyed attending farm camp at Simsbury's Flamig Farm as well as visiting the animals there. He loved hiking, fishing, swimming and being outdoors. He was a member of the Simsbury Fish and Game Club and thoroughly enjoyed the opening day Fishing Derby. This Autumn, he went fishing on the Connecticut Sound. He loved to go to the family cabin in the Adirondacks with his Dad and Grandfather. He also loved to spend summer days on the beach at his grandmother's cottage in Niantic. He vacationed every summer with his family on Nantucket. Logan had many significant experiences. He was an honorary member of the Air National Guard 118th Airlift Squadron, Flying Yankees, through the Pilot for a Day Program. He was also an honorary Junior Fire Fighter for the squad on the same day. Last October, Logan was made a Defender for a Day with 103rd Security Forces Squadron in the CT Air National Guard. Logan enjoyed family weekends at The Hole in The Wall Gang camp in Ashford. Logan attended The Master's School in Simsbury, where he had many friends and made a lasting impact on the lives of all who got to know him and his story. Logan was treated at Connecticut Children's Medical Center where he received excellent care that lifted his spirits and extended his life. He was friends with everyone from the security guards and front desk personnel to the nurses, doctors and surgeons. He also received excellent treatment at Massachusetts General Hospital and was housed by the generous people at Christopher's Haven in Boston. Logan was also an avid sports fan. He played Spring and Fall soccer in the town of Simsbury since age 5. His team this past Fall, the Simsbury Rebels, were a great joy to Logan. They stood and cheered as Logan scored the last goal of the 2016 season. Logan was an honorary member of the University of Hartford men's basketball team, the Hartford Hawks. This wonderful friendship was made possible through the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation. Logan considered his teammates his brothers. He loved them and truly felt like he was part of the team. Logan and his best friend Andrew Kerwin followed the New England Patriots football team very closely. The two friends were able to attend 2 games together this past year. On December 3, Logan fulfilled a lifelong dream and met his hero Tom Brady. Logan greatly admired Tom's leadership on the field, his determination and perseverance. Logan stated that he wanted to have the same qualities in himself and that certainly was the case. Logan is survived by his parents Matthew and Josephine and sister Keara of West Simsbury, Grandmother Rosemary Hughes of Niantic, Grandparents Richard and Lynne Schoenhardt of West Simsbury, Grandparents James and Barbara Shay of North Granby, and many loving uncles, aunts, and cousins. Logan's family will receive friends Thursday, February 23 from 4-8pm at Carmon Funeral Home & Family Center, 301 Country Club Road, Avon. The funeral service will be held at Covenant Presbyterian Church "The Barn", 124 Old Farms Road, Simsbury on Friday, February 24 at 12 noon. In lieu of flowers, the family would like to suggest that donations to be made to The Master's School, 36 Westledge Road, West Simsbury, CT 06092 or the Cancer Survivors Network c/o Simsbury Bank, 27 Dale Road, Avon, CT 06001.

Logan reminds us all of what it means to be a true warrior. The three lessons Logan teaches are the same three taught by another beautiful person, in my life, that's passed to the spirit world: Courage, find out who you are and be it and never stop learning. Same three lessons taught by Bruce Lee. That's why I'm now calling Logan, little wolverine. Taken from the new movie about Wolverine called Logan. We love and honor Logan and his family.

Dear Schoenhardt family,
Although I was never privileged enough to meet Logan or be a part of your extended family & friends, I was drawn to Logan's story in a very personal way. Logan looks so very much like my 9 year old grandson who lives in CA, much too far away! The clarity and wisdom shown by Logan is something we should all strive for, not to mention his incredible courage, and yours as well. Having lost a brother-in-law, 48, to a brain tumor, a 3 yr old grand niece to neuroblastoma, as well as being a nurse, I can only imagine your heavy hearts, yet joy in knowing the courageous fight is over for this bravest boy (and family). I'm sure you know how many lives Logan has touched in his far too short time here, but I'm also sure there are many, many more like me that will never be known to you. Such amazing work in his 10 short years! I hope everyone has a chance to see the beautiful piece ESPN did on Logan and Tom Brady (Thank you Tom!). Logan is definitely the hero in that story! My heart goes out to you, dear family and friends, with a special prayer for Mom and Grandma, as I am both (3 boys and 3 grandsons!). Sending healing light, love and prayers. Carolyn

Dear family and friends of Logan,
Although I never met Logan and have only read about a fraction of what his short life here represented. Something compelled me to first off tell you all how heartbroken I am for you and I pray that God will give you strength to cope with this devastating loss. But my main reason for writing is that I want you to know (and I'm sure you do!) what an amazing gift God had sent you by gracing you with the ability to actually raise an Angel! I truly believe, especially when reading about what an extraordinary child Logan was, even in spite of all his challenges in life. That this young man was chosen by his creator specifically because he had the gift to teach people of all ages how to face a devastating disease with a positive attitude and never give up. I am thankful for having read about your remarkable son/Angel and I will keep you all in my thoughts and prayers, that God and Logan will send you the energy and strength you need to get through and endure the difficult days ahead. God bless your Angel and God bless you ALL!

Dearest Logan,
My heart goes out to your family for the loss of a son, a bright enthusiastic young boy who captured the hearts of millions of people. Those who viewed the ESPN caption for a small glimpse of a brave young boy. You grasped my heart, brought tears to my eyes and sadness in my soul, but in the end you brought a smile to my face. A smile that made me look up to Heaven to tell God, Thank you for taking Logan into your arms, for surely your goodness shall bring him peace, love and your comfort.
"Blessed be those who come in the name of the Lord."
May you rest in peace.

Logan truly was an amazing young man. I have so many fond memories of him at CPC when he helped me greet, held the basket to collect the cups at communion, Sunday School, and how he loved to run at the back of Celebration Hall and outside at Day Camp. He was always so happy, kind, thoughtful, caring and fun to be with. His laughter, humor and smile was contagious. We all are blessed to have had him in our lives. My thoughts and prayers go out to Logan, his parents Jo and Matt, his sister Keara and all his family and friends. As followers of Jesus we have comfort in knowing Logan truly is in a much better place. Safe journey home Logan!

Ed and I are so sorry to hear about Logan's passing. When we saw the article in the Courant the other day, we had no idea he was your grandson. He sounded like an amazing person and the world is a sadder place because he is no longer here. Someday we will know why angels like Logan have to suffer so much in their short lives.. Until then, we will keep Logan and the rest of the family in our prayers.
