Mrs. Lola Gentry, age 86 of Dell City, Texas, died Friday, August 26, 2016, at the Garrison Home in Lubbock, Texas and under the care of Kindred at Home (Hospice), Lubbock, Texas. Services will be Friday, September 2, 2016, at First Baptist Church in Dell City, Texas at 10:30 a.m. Pastor Dickie Means will officiate. Burial will immediately follow the service at Dell Valley Memorial Acres in Dell City. Visitation will be Thursday, September 1, 2016, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00p.m., at Denton Wood Funeral Home, 1001North Canal Street, in Carlsbad, New Mexico. Denton-Wood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Mrs. Gentry was born January 21, 1930, in 0plin, Texas. She married Alvin Gentry of Carlsbad, New Mexico on October 26, 1946. They moved to Dell City on February 2, 1948 and helped the development of the first farms in the Valley. She also helped organize the First Baptist Church, taught Sunday School, and served on various committees. Lola was the last of the eight charter members of Dell City's First Baptist Church. In 1959, Lola was named "Homemaker of the Year" by the El Paso-Hudspeth County Soil Conservation District in a "Save the soil and Save Texas" program sponsored by The El Paso Herald Post, Ft. Worth Press, and 24 other Texas firms, including utilities and railroads. She was also awarded the Region II title. In 1957, she took up Trick Riding as a hobby, which lead to the sewing of costumes and western clothes for herself, her son Gerald and her daughter Patricia. This resulted in the custom designing for others and in 1962, she started the operation of an international mail-order business, Lola Gentry Originals, designing and making patterns for Western and English riding apparel. In 1980, she became a contract carrier for the United States Postal Service and continued until 2004. She also owned and operated Gentry Insurance Agency from 1983 to 1989. Mrs. Gentry is survived by one son, Gerald Gentry and wife Terri, of Dell City, Texas; two daughters, Trisha Rowland and husband Perry, of Lubbock, Texas; and Jayne Green and husband Terry, of Salt Flat, Texas; Six grandchildren, Craig Gentry, Clay Gentry and wife Tammy, Blake Gentry and wife Jessica, Shawna Dycus and husband Jon, Jayme Schlabs and husband Truett, and Amie Jo Green: eleven great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband, Alvin Gentry, her parents, Homer and Eva Mayfield, two brothers, Henry and Lester, and one son Stephen. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that memorial donations be made to the West Texas Alzheimer's Association, 3610 22nd Ste.300, Lubbock, TX 79410. Phone: 806-332-9196.
