Town of Newburgh, NY

Loreida Greco of the Town of Newburgh, a longtime area resident, entered into rest Friday, May 21, 2010 at home. She was 87.

The daughter of the late Aleksander and Hilda Ottenson Poots, Loreida was born March 5, 1923 in Nara, Estonia. Loreida was the wife of the late Carmelo Greco.

During World War II at age 17, she moved to Germany and then Sweden and worked as a laborer and translator of five different languages for our American troops. In 1948, she came to America through Ellis Island and worked as a seamstress in Manhattan for several years and married Carmelo Greco in 1954. Loreida became an American citizen in 1956.

She is survived by her son, Frank Greco and his wife, Christina of the Town of Newburgh; her daughter, Lorraine Monaco of the Town of Newburgh; and grandchildren: Michele Greco, Ashley Monaco and Kelly Greco. She is also survived by nieces and nephews. Loreida was predeceased by her son, Larry and a sister, Oie Kroben.

Visitation for family and friends will take place Tuesday, May 25, from 5-8 p.m. at White & Venuto Funeral Home, 188 North Plank Rd. (Rt 32), Newburgh, NY.

Funeral service will take place 12 noon, Wednesday, May 26, at the funeral home. Reverend Ernie Mossl will officiate. Burial will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Newburgh.
